Basic things to do in Martinique in one day

Ever been to Martinique? What did you do? Where did you visit?

Ever been to Martinique? What did you do? Where did you visit?

French is the official language spoken in Martinique and the Euro is the standard currency.

Some locals speak English and Creole so getting around the island is not that difficult if you do not speak French.

I always feel like I am far away from Saint Lucia whenever I visit Martinique. Being in Martinique feels like being in a large metropolitan country.

I love the unique structure of the buildings, the multiple lanes and almost perfect roads and road markings.

There are a vast number of vehicles, traffic signs and traffic lights.

Even the housing project- “The Cité” is unique as it looks like small apartments fit to be a hotel.

It is amazing how a small island in the Caribbean is so developed. Martinique gives a different kind of overseas vibe.

Downtown Fort-de-France

Fort-de-France is the capital of Martinique. You can shop till you drop because there are lots of stores to choose from.

If you love bags, jewelry, shoes and clothes then you will love Fort-de-France. Everything is at your disposable and within proximity.

Better yet, the items are inexpensive and there is always a sale!

Of course, you could visit the high-end stores and spend on the top brands!

You could taste French cuisine, purchase souvenirs from the local vendors, take photos, window shop, sightsee or go to the waterfront if you do not feel to shop.

Carrefour

All I can say is you must visit for yourself! Carrefour offers variety so you can get practically everything you need at a reasonable price.

Carrefour used to be my mom’s favorite shopping mall before her passing.

She would not leave Carrefour without soap powder, yop, magnum, oil, saltfish and cashew nuts.

Grand Marche Market

I could smell the spices, herbs and fresh produce coming from Grand Marche Market from across the street.

Lots of stalls with a variety of fresh and colorful produce.

As with most markets, the loud noises echoed as vendors spoke together to lure buyers to their stall.

La Galleria

La Galleria is beautiful both inside and out. The first thing you notice is the large outdoor car park.

La Galleria is a huge shopping mall where you could spend the entire day going from store to store.

There are many restaurants, fast food joints and high-end stores. There is also a large grocery store.

Jardin de Balata

If you are up for a long ride and a cool hike then you could visit Jardin de Balata. Jardin de Balata is a botanical garden about 20 minutes from Fort-de-France.

The garden is evergreen with tall palm trees, beautiful flowers and plants and fishponds.

Listen to the birds, inhale fresh air, feel the cool breeze gently touch your skin and enjoy the scenery.

You could purchase souvenirs at the store and dine at the restaurant. An entry fee is charged!
