Who is Doctor Haden Alcindor?
Doctor Alcindor hails from the beautiful community of Aux Lyons, Mabouya Valley, Dennery. He grew up tying cows, carrying bananas and working the land.
Sciences were his strengths whilst attending Clendon Mason Memorial Secondary School and he excelled academically in his science subjects.
Practicing medicine came naturally to Doctor Alcindor. He reared livestock as a child. He made natural remedies for his sick animals by feeding them lime, sour orange, salt and sugar water.
He would use a stick and rope to mobilize his animals’ fractures. The sick animals would do well and eventually recover fully so it further developed his passion to care for the sick.
As a child, Doctor Alcindor would dissect animals, look at their organs and loved their anatomy and physiology.
He attributes his desire to pursue medicine from his farming culture.
Why orthopedics?
Initially, Doctor Alcindor wanted to pursue pediatrics or internal medicine because of his love for it. He went into orthopedics after sustaining injuries after he ran into a wall whilst on his 2nd year at medical school.
He fractured his left hand and suffered multiple injuries to his left side. He spent about four months with a cast on his hand and had to go to orthopedic clinic daily.
He volunteered to work with the orthopedics team, do on calls and surgeries and then developed a profound love for the specialty.
Doctor Alcindor recognized that choosing orthopedics would be rewarding. He would be fixing things and be innovative and creative in his ideas. He saw orthopedics far beyond he saw pediatrics and internal medicine.
He saw orthopedics as being beyond giving people medication. He believes that God creates but orthopedics fixes or redesigns. He saw a lot of potential and results in the work that the orthopedics team did and in all the deformities and corrections.
Doctor Alcindor explained that orthopedics is one of the most diverse, innovative and complex specialties. It requires lots of knowledge, surgical skills and discipline.

Working with Doctor Alcindor was always a breath of fresh air for me. I enjoyed his round wards because they were fun yet educational. I never felt like my input was not valued and he always gave a listening ear. I appreciated that he involved the nurses in decision making especially as it pertained to the time of a patient’s discharge.
