Have essentials on standby and be prepared to survive a storm.
Stormy times
The water supply might be closed before and during a storm. Water might be contaminated and unavailable for days after a storm.
Store drinking water in clean storage containers. Ensure an adequate supply of water for cooking and personal hygiene.
Flashlights or lanterns come in handy when there is no power. Make sure you have extra batteries!
Candles can be unsafe and increase the risk of fires but can be used during a storm.
Securely keep candles in a suitable candle holder.
Do not leave candles unattended and keep them out of reach of children.
Remember to have matches or lighters.
It is a plus to know what to do in case of a fire.
Necessities
Invest in a first aid kit.
Ensure electronic devices, especially cell phones, are fully charged.
House nonperishable items.
It might be difficult to obtain food during and after a storm so keep crackers, canned foods, juice, bottled water, energy bars and nuts close by.
Stock up on sanitary items such as pads, soap, toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
Place all important documents in a waterproof, sealed bag so they will not get damaged.
Grab and go
Have a light, ready to grab and go waterproof bag with an emergency kit and essential supplies.
Keep snacks, toiletries, water, properly stored knife, insect repellent, medication and medical documents, cash and important documents such as your will, passport and personal identification in the bag.
Extras
Outside and even inside can get wet and muddy. Put on rain boots.
Listen for weather updates on a battery powered radio if there is no power supply.
Clear yard of everything that could be a hazard and be projectile with the wind.
Trim low-lying trees and secure loose wood and galvanize.
Keep animals inside or loose from a cord and free from a kennel.
Protect your home and yourself
Reinforce doors and windows.
Stay indoors unless advised to do otherwise by the public health advisory.
Discuss an emergency plan with your family.
Also discuss a possible meeting area if outdoors and get separated.
Know the nearest shelter and routes you can take.
In case of an evacuation, assist the vulnerable such as the elderly, children, pregnant women and the sick, disabled and injured.
Vehicle safety
Place vehicles in a safe area.
Keep an emergency kit in the vehicle.
Keep a waterproof bag in the vehicle with your personal items and hygienic products.
Roads may be impassable during and after the storm or you might have damage to your vehicle. Yet, ensure your vehicle has gas.
Remember
Inform relatives of where you will be if you are not home so they can be less worried.
Have emergency contact numbers such as the hospital near you, police station, fire service, shelter and public health departments.
Switch off the power supply if you see flooding in the house, damaged power lines or you must leave home. Also, turn off the gas.
Ensure medication refills for many days.
Need to evacuate?
Inform your family. Grab your emergency supply kit and bag and ensure you have your cell phone and cell phone charger.
Do not drive through flooded areas. Vehicles can be swept away or may stall.
If you are in no direct harm, it is safer to stay indoors and away from the windows and wait till the storm passes.
The destruction from a storm is unknown. It is better to evacuate from low lying areas before the storm approaches.
Be safe! Be vigilant!

My last difficult goodbye was on May 18th, 2020, when my mom died suddenly. I literally felt a hole in my heart when I saw my mom’s eyes roll back as her body gave way on the hospital bed. I shook her so she could wake up, I called out to her and stared at her in disbelief. I could not believe that I had lost my mom, bestfriend, companion, motivator and my everything. I got a tattoo in memory of her and had “my hardest goodbye” written. I can never forget that traumatizing ordeal. Memories of her death still haunt me. Life can never be the same…
Ever been to Martinique? What did you do? Where did you visit?
Ever been to Martinique? What did you do? Where did you visit?
French is the official language spoken in Martinique and the Euro is the standard currency.
Some locals speak English and Creole so getting around the island is not that difficult if you do not speak French.
I always feel like I am far away from Saint Lucia whenever I visit Martinique. Being in Martinique feels like being in a large metropolitan country.
I love the unique structure of the buildings, the multiple lanes and almost perfect roads and road markings.
There are a vast number of vehicles, traffic signs and traffic lights.
Even the housing project- “The Cité” is unique as it looks like small apartments fit to be a hotel.
It is amazing how a small island in the Caribbean is so developed. Martinique gives a different kind of overseas vibe.
Downtown Fort-de-France
Fort-de-France is the capital of Martinique. You can shop till you drop because there are lots of stores to choose from.
If you love bags, jewelry, shoes and clothes then you will love Fort-de-France. Everything is at your disposable and within proximity.
Better yet, the items are inexpensive and there is always a sale!
Of course, you could visit the high-end stores and spend on the top brands!
You could taste French cuisine, purchase souvenirs from the local vendors, take photos, window shop, sightsee or go to the waterfront if you do not feel to shop.
Common places to visit
Rue Victor Hugo
Rue Victor Hugo is the main shopping route in Fort-de-France filled with stores on either side.
You could get the latest trends, indulge in French treats or enjoy the fine dining.
St. Louis Cathedral
The St. Louis Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral church located in downtown Fort-de-France.
Walk in, pray, sing along during mass or enjoy the beautiful architecture.
Carrefour
All I can say is you must visit for yourself! Carrefour offers variety so you can get practically everything you need at a reasonable price.
Carrefour used to be my mom’s favorite shopping mall before her passing.
She would not leave Carrefour without soap powder, yop, magnum, oil, saltfish and cashew nuts.
Grand Marche Market
I could smell the spices, herbs and fresh produce coming from Grand Marche Market from across the street.
Lots of stalls with a variety of fresh and colorful produce.
As with most markets, the loud noises echoed as vendors spoke together to lure buyers to their stall.
La Galleria
La Galleria is beautiful both inside and out. The first thing you notice is the large outdoor car park.
La Galleria is a huge shopping mall where you could spend the entire day going from store to store.
There are many restaurants, fast food joints and high-end stores. There is also a large grocery store.
Jardin de Balata
If you are up for a long ride and a cool hike then you could visit Jardin de Balata. Jardin de Balata is a botanical garden about 20 minutes from Fort-de-France.
The garden is evergreen with tall palm trees, beautiful flowers and plants and fishponds.
Listen to the birds, inhale fresh air, feel the cool breeze gently touch your skin and enjoy the scenery.
You could purchase souvenirs at the store and dine at the restaurant. An entry fee is charged!

The Canaries River is beautifully situated in a forested area in Canaries. It is about a 5-minute drive from the highway.
Do not wonder! The Canaries River is easily accessible plus the road is in good condition!
I heard the water forcefully hitting the rocks as we approached the river. As I inhaled the clean air, I felt the fresh cool breeze hug me. What a feeling!
I had a great time on the riverbanks at Tony’s Place. It made for a perfect relaxation day.
The neat setting served as a great place to have a picnic, chill with loved ones and site see to enjoy the lush vegetation.
There were tables, chairs and a grill to turn the river lime into a cookout.
You could catch fish and crayfish, take a bath in the river or eat the fruits fresh from the trees.
Optional but ideal out of courtesy! Tip Tony after using his place even though it is free. Help him maintain it so it could be as lovely upon your next visit.
There is also a water treatment plant close by.
Bouton
I have heard many stories about poverty and the “backwardness” in the Bouton community so I was curious to visit the place for the first time.
Bouton used to be the talk of the town, so much so, that individuals would jokingly ask if one was from Bouton to indicate that they were harebrained.
There is a small, single paved road from the Soufriere Highway that leads to the Bouton Combined School which is the only public building in the community.
The drive to the community was long. I was worried that we would go down the precipice so I was not at ease.
At last, we made it! The trip to Bouton was breathtaking and had me in awe. Bouton screams everything tropical.
I enjoyed the view of the peak of the Pitons, the cruise ships coming in and how the sea and sky formed one as I tried to look beyond the horizon.
Bouton is extremely peaceful! I did not hear any music nor people talking. I did not see a shop nor vendors along the road. It was almost like an empty town.
I enjoyed taking pictures, picking mangoes and tamarind and conversing with the few community members I saw.
Piton’s Waterfall
One of the first things you see as you enter the Piton’s Waterfall vicinity is a large parking. My relatives made it a picnic area!
Pay a fee before entry and hike for about 3 minutes then voila! For a moment, it seemed like I was out in the wilderness because I saw no sign of life.
The adventurous walk was filled with trees, birds, stairs and rocks!
The falls echoed in my ears as I got closer.
True beauty! Piton’s Waterfall is a beautiful place to escape, have a family outing and comfortably enjoy nature.
You could sit next to one of the three pools or soak in the water. The pools range from cool to warm and are shallow and great for kids.
There is a pool with warm water set in a manner to receive a back massage. I did enjoy!
The rocks directly beneath the waterfall were slippery. I nearly fell!
The walk to Piton’s Waterfall could be tasking for people with mobility issues. It might be tiring for children.
Changing rooms are available.
Sulphur Springs
The Sulphur Springs is a must visit just to have a unique experience. I did not get to enjoy the mud bath this time around because the place was overcrowded.
Click on link to see more about my last Sulphur Springs experience
Anse L’ivrogne Beach
Right there in Choiseul! Anse L’ivrogne Beach is also known as Sevoigne Beach.
Picturesque! Anse L’ivrogne Beach lays at the base of Gros Piton. It has very soft white to golden brown sand, beautiful palm trees, clear water and lots of pebbles.
The long beach is secluded so getting to it is that of exploration. We drove until we got to the ruins of the 18th century sugar plantation then walked until we got to the beach.
I viewed what was left of the old sugar plantation with fascination as the wheel turned. What was that I kept thinking.
There are lots of trees and rocks along the way to the beach. I was surprised at the number of fish I saw in the stream as I crossed the bridge.
Anse L’ivrogne Beach was peaceful and made for the perfect place for leisure time and fun.
There were people on the other side of the beach grilling, playing music and having a good time.
You could hike the Gros Piton trail through Anse L’ivrogne Beach.
What to do whilst at Anse L’ivrogne Beach? Watch the pelicans search for their meal. Build sandcastles, fish or have a fun filled family racing game. Cover yourself with the white sand, enjoy the sea breeze and watch the wave as it approaches the shore or splashes on the rocks.
Enjoy the simple pleasures that are worth millions! Enjoy the gift of life and living in paradise!

The St. Lucia Shooting Association commenced in 1994 and has approximately 400 members to date. The St. Lucia Shooting Association is a club established for the promotion of safe firearm practices and handling.
The St. Lucia Shooting Association serves as an ideal shooting club to join to learn more about responsible and safe firearm use, shooting range safety and practices and for provisional training for firearm certification.
Licensed firearm holders or those licensed or authorized under a company’s licensed group can join the association to sharpen shooting skills, get more comfortable and confident with firearm use and gain more experience.
The St. Lucia Shooting Association is a registered member of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) so takes part in the global shooting competition. The St. Lucia Shooting Association meets on a weekly basis to train for IPSC since IPSC tournaments are broadcast for global participation.
Bordelais Shooting Range
The Bordelais Shooting Range located in Anse Canot, Dennery functions as a cold outdoor shooting range for firearm training. It is also a target shooting competition zone for The St. Lucia Shooting Association.
Big plus! Food and beverages are sold on the range and there is a washroom!
Two day shooting tournament
The St. Lucia Shooting Association hosted a two day shooting tournament which was a competition to identity the top target shooter.
The first day of the tournament was Iron and Steel Targets and the second day was Paper Targets.
The competition entailed having one shooter per target where each shooter had to be on line to fire at their target at the target bay.
The tournament was well organized and all participants knew the rules and what was expected of them.
I had fun watching the participants display their shooting skills. I witnessed some anxious members with shaky hands whilst shooting. I marvelled as I saw the gun powder being dispersed in the air and the bullet shells hit the ground- things I have only seen in movies.
Some participants were intimidated by the experienced shooters and mentioned that “Blue- Al Lionel” might win again. The members mentioned that Blue was a good shooter and had won many tournaments.
Reems Sonson as Lara Croft
This was my first time visiting a shooting range and it was rather interesting and exciting. I was called Lara Croft because of my attire. I really felt like an actress in an action movie.
It was a sunny day so the weather was fitting for the event. Hold a cap, dress appropriately and comfortably, wear closed toe shoes and hold your sunscreen when visiting an outdoor shooting range.
My oh my! I was told that the place could be noisy but I did not expect it to be that loud. Walk with your shooting gloves and ear protection- ear plugs or ear muffs and eye protection- goggles or sunglasses and ensure that they fit properly.
Basic range safety
Keep gun unloaded until you are at the fire line! Keep finger off trigger until you are ready to shoot. No discharging of firearm except at designated shooting areas and designated shooting targets. Shooters should shoot only from the firing line.
Keep gun on your person- do not keep gun unattended. Keep firearms pointed in a safe direction.
Wash hands and face after shooting to remove gun powder residue.
Drink non-alcoholic beverages before and whilst on the shooting range. Be responsible, vigilant and focused.
Have a fun time and speak with the Range Master if you have any questions.
The results are in!

My partner took me to Trim’s National Riding Stables on a beautiful Saturday afternoon for a one hour trail ride. He knew that horseback riding had been something I was longing to do.
I was extremely excited for his wonderful gesture. I told him that I wanted to dress like a professional horseback rider and he laughed away. Too bad I forgot to wear my leather boots on the day! Hmph!
Trim’s National Riding Stables is located in Cas En Bas, Gros Islet close to the Cas En Bas beach. Talk about the perfect location!
Neigh
We were warmly greeted by the friendly staff who had anticipated our arrival as we had called in advance. After receiving a few pointers on ways to maintain control of the horse, safety measures and what to expect, we were all set and given helmets! We were allowed to stand on the red dots, climb the step stool and seat comfortably on the saddle!
My horse Becky
There were so many horses in the stable that I wondered if we would be paired with the ideal horse since we were first time riders. Boy was I wrong to wonder…
I was paired with the sweetest horse- Becky. I was thrilled but worried that I would fall, Becky fall over me and break my body parts or that she would throw me over. What a scary thought I thought as I replayed the scenarios in my head.
Becky was stubborn and wanted to eat grass the entire trip! She was quick and smart. Her body would move to the grass although I would have her head in the other direction.
Before I knew it she would swiftly swing her head towards the grass. My partner’s horse was well behaved all the way.
The guide had informed us that we were to try our best to prevent the horses from eating grass so I was on a mission but Becky was not complying!
I loved Becky because she moved at the right pace and I felt like we connected despite our “don’t eat the grass” confrontation the entire journey.
The best of nature
The weather was perfect and fitting for this outdoor activity. It was mostly cloudy. The dirt road was mostly moist since it rained on the previous day.
We passed through the rocky, paved and semi paved trails and even muddy puddles. What fun this was!
I am a nature lover. I enjoyed the beautiful view of the Cas En Bas community, the different flora and fauna, the view of the Atlantic Ocean from the hillside and the feel of the cool breeze on my skin.
Beach stop
We stopped on the Cas En Bas beach for a photoshoot and to enjoy the view. The guide was a perfect tour guide and gave us a little history on the rocket who saw on the beach.
Persons were seen dining at the nearby restaurant on the beach, some were kite and windsurfing and others enjoying the sand. The thrills of island living!
Horse surprises
When I saw the horses poop, I shouted, “that is huge!” I was flabbergasted. Oh my, watching the male horse urinate was even more alarming because of the large forceful nature of the urine.
What a surprise! On the way back the horses went slightly faster and the “gallops” echoed. I thought that by this time they would have been tired but only to find out that they were racing home to enjoy the grass that awaited.
Our guide
Our guide was funny, knowledgeable and knew lots of history about Cas En Bas and the horses. He stayed with us the entire time, ensured that we were comfortable and felt safe throughout the ride.
Reems the rider
I felt slight discomfort during the ride as my body is not used to being in such position. My body was extra stiff after the ride and my bam felt a bit sore.
Yes I think so too! I need to do some more home exercises!
Overall
The horses were well trained, well-groomed and very calm. They had no bad odour. I had a fun and unique experience and felt like I was in a movie. I will definitely try horseback riding again and may be do a two hour ride to swim with the horses in water.

Nested in the beautiful community of Micoud is the map of Saint Lucia engraved on a rock near a cliff. The engraving is very similar to the map of Saint Lucia.
It takes about a 20 minute walk to get to the map. The journey is naturally beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. It made me appreciate life and being able to see clearly even more.
Nature along the way
Listen
You could “listen to the beauty” of the place. The grasshoppers proudly and loudly sing their song.
The Atlantic Ocean is known to be rough so I admired it from the distant. The rough sea crashes hastily on the rocks and the wind howls but with great joy.
The birds chirped but sweetly and in conversation.
See
Oh my, you see a perfect view of the Micoud village and all its surroundings. Mount Gimie and the Twin Pitons could have been seen clearly and seem to follow your every move.
Mount Gimie is the highest mountain in Saint Lucia and looked like a giant with its’ peak hidden in the clouds. I really did not know that the tallest mountains could have been seen from Micoud.
You see the waves moving towards the cliff and hitting the rocks in every direction as you head closer to the map.
The sea looked like a painting with its different colours- dark blue, green and turquoise.
The grasshoppers were hopping with excitement that one almost entered my eye.
I saw many palm trees on a beach nearby. Will visiting the beach be our next adventure? Hmmm!
Imagine a vessel was spotted nearby!
Feel
You feel hugs from the cool breeze. I enjoyed feeling the grass on my feet and watching the grass run with the wind.
The fun journey
Some persons were having a picnic along the way and others were relaxing in their vehicles. The advantages of tropical living!
The views were so clear that you could pin point the various districts on the east to west coast.
I had fun trying to climb the huge rocks and playing with the pricking cactus.
We made it!
I felt the waves from miles away as it hit the rocks. This was a clear indication that we had made it!
The beautiful coastline was very rocky and picture perfect with the beautiful scenery.
The pregnant clouds made this cloudy day perfect for a hike in this sweet paradise. It really was a fitting and fun activity.
Paradise makes me feel relaxed, at ease and allows me to enter my calmest state of mind. I love all my encounters with nature!
Dislike hiking? Well you could drive to the end of the cliff!
Surprisingly some Saint Lucians want to migrate to have a better life and try something new.
Whereas, some persons from overseas want to move to the tropics to enjoy island living and have a quiet and laid-back lifestyle. Which do you prefer?
I visited Bay Gardens Marina Haven with my partner in December to celebrate his birthday. This was my second time visiting Bay Gardens Marina Haven but this was my first time spending the night.
We had called to make the reservation over the telephone and selected an all-inclusive package. We both love to eat so we wanted access to unlimited drinks and food.
The friendly receptionist informed us over the telephone that we were not allowed to visit the other Bay Gardens resorts due to the current coronavirus disease pandemic.
Ordinarily guests would have access to the Bay Gardens Family inclusive of Bay Gardens Inn, Bay Gardens Hotel and Bay Gardens Resort & Spa. Could you imagine that guests with an all-inclusive package have access to some of the services provided at all of the Bay Gardens Family!
What a great deal! We really missed out on that deal due to the pandemic! Guests could enjoy all the services provided at the Bay Gardens Family by simply charging services to their room.
Plus you get access to Splash Island Water Park. Book at the front desk and ask about hopping at the Bay Gardens Family!
Splash Island Water Park
Splash Island Water Park is a water sports park located on Reduit Beach. It is filled with water slides almost like an obstacle course. It is a fun experience! It reminded me of the American television show “WipeOut” the first time I tried it!
Heartbeat
Bay Gardens Marina Haven is in a perfect location. It is located in the heart of the entertainment zone in Rodney Bay. Bay Gardens Marina Haven is directly opposite the Rodney Bay Marina!
Bay Gardens Marina Haven is about a 5 minute drive from the Reduit Beach and all the other popular amenities in the area. The hotel is located about 20 minutes from the City of Castries and 90 minutes from Vieux Fort.
We are here
We parked at the free parking area and headed to the hotel. We went through security as he checked our temperature and ensured we sanitized our hands.
We confirmed our reservations through the front desk and was then taken to our room by the security guard. He ensured that all the electronics were functional.
Checked in
We checked in at 4 p.m. on the Saturday and had to check out at 5 p.m. on the Sunday. Check out is usually at 11 a.m. but you could do a late checkout depending on the availability of the room. Check with the front desk!
Our room
The air conditioned room included a closet with a safe, ironing board and iron. There was a telephone, cable television, coffee marker, refrigerator, kitchen utensils and an assortment of tea.
The bathroom contained a hair dryer, towels and rags. The soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and lotion were in a wall dispenser so you press and release to receive.
View from the room!
Our room had a balcony with a view of the pool and hotel, it was really unique. The sky, pool and the painting of the hotel seemed like one. My sight was pleased and I felt like I was in a baby blue world. The balcony had lots of cool breeze.
The room also had a garden view because it was towards the back of the hotel close to a garden.
?
As we explored the three story hotel, I realized that the only area to relax was at the poolside or in the balcony.
On first impression I wondered what we would do for fun and what activities were available. It made me feel a bit disappointed because I felt like the package was not worth the price.
We tried!
We decided to go for a swim in the pool about after 6 p.m. Who were we kidding!? The water was extremely cold so the attempt was unsuccessful. It was actually funny so we had a good laugh at ourselves.
Day light view
Anchor restaurant
Anchor Restaurant is the only restaurant to dine in at Bay Gardens Marina Haven. It is small and cozy! Anchor Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We were not provided with a food menu but the waiter clearly outlined the options available. There is a bar in the restaurant so you could have a drink at the bar and watch soccer.
The way to my heart!
After eating the food, I said I saw the reason the hotel is more on the pricy side. Words cannot describe the taste, smell and presentation of the food because it was so well done.
Arrival food
Chicken burger and fries were served with fruits. The tartar sauce on the fries was perfect! The fries were crunchy and well done. We asked for a burger to take to the room because it was that good! I was impressed with the food for the first attempt.
Dinner
The area was decorated with birthday decorations and the staff sung happy birthday. It was a really lovely gesture on their part. My partner was really excited and surprised. I felt like it was my birthday during the singing because I was excited too.
Shrimp cocktail
The shrimp cocktail included fried shrimp, honey dew, cantaloupe, bell peppers and lettuce served with a sweet sauce. The shrimps were jumbo and the mixture of the vegetables and sauce was too delicious. The sweetness of the bell peppers and honey dew gave the salad an extra special taste.
BBQ chicken
The dinner menu included chicken or fish with the available sides and of course we chose barbeque chicken! The barbeque chicken had a pinch of ginger that gave it extra flavouring along with the honey barbeque sauce.
The food made me dance! The mashed potato was creamy and thick! Yum Yum Yom yom! I told the waiter to give the compliments to the chef and inform him that the presentation was A+.
Rich chocolate cake
Dessert included chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream. The chocolate cake was rich, chocolatey and not too sweet. It was tasty!
Banana bread was wrapped and given to us, how thoughtful. That was unexpected! The staff for the night were tremendously friendly and helpful.
Later during the night, I craved the chocolate cake. I should have asked for some to take to the room!
Breakfast
Breakfast started off with yoghurt and fruits. We then ordered croissant, pancakes, sausage, bacon, salad, eggs and chocolate cake.
I ordered my eggs filled with peppers, onions, ham, mushrooms and cheese! I love food!
Lunch
We opted for the chicken stir fry, shrimp stir fry and salad for lunch.
I had the shrimp stir fry which I really enjoyed and my partner took the chicken stir fry. The texture of the spaghetti was prepared just how I love it. It was not too soft nor too firm.
Dessert
Pizza
We also ordered a pizza, chocolate cake and chocolate ice cream to seal lunch!
Blue paradise
If you are looking for a quiet, small and intimate hotel to relax then this is the spot. The poolside is heart melting.
You are barely able to differentiate the colour of the pool from the painting on the hotel and even from the sky. They really formed one uniform master piece.
Relaxing on a pool chair keeps you at ease as you enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and picture perfect scenery.
Interesting fact
Bay Gardens Inn, Bay Gardens Hotel and Bay Gardens Resort & Spa are all within close range. If you want a beach bath then Bay Gardens Marina Haven is a mere 20 minute walk from the beach. Even closer if you drive!
Bay Gardens Resorts offer many options so you could have a Bay Gardens experience by choosing to stay on the Reduit Beachfront, within the Rodney Bay Village or The Rodney Bay Marina!
Take your pick.
Tropical island experience
I enjoyed watching the sun set over the yachts. The view of the marina was breath taking. It gives you a tropical island experience. You see the beautiful wavy mountains, the green trees and the sea.
Enjoyable
I had an enjoyable stay. I loved the unique shape of the pool. I loved that the hotel was not too crowded as it was mostly quiet. I loved the food and drinks so my palate was fully satisfied from the moment I arrived.I loved it all!
Free Wi-Fi was available throughout the hotel with no interruptions in connection.
The hotel is wheelchair friendly for persons confined to a wheelchair and there is an elevator available although it was out of use during our stay.
Room service was available until 9 p.m.
Yes you can!
Book a night stay or a day pass to chill by the pool, enjoy the food and relax!

This is not a paid or sponsored review but is an honest comprehensive look at my experience at Bay Gardens Marina Haven. I have no affiliations with Bay Gardens Marina Haven and this blog post is based on my personal experience and stay at Bay Gardens Marina Haven.
As for Bay Gardens Marina Haven, I hope this post helps you get more bookings and hotel stays. This blog post is to help build awareness of the stay at the hotel and to help locals see the cost effectiveness of an all-inclusive staycation.
I visited Soufriere on a beautiful Friday afternoon to spend the day with one of my close friends. I took a bus from Castries to Soufriere and I slept throughout the bus ride. I needed to catch up on some much needed sleep! After about an hour I had arrived at my destination!
Soufriere is beautiful in every single way! I got off the bus at the bus terminal and took a walk around the Soufriere market. A few vendors were selling their produce but the market was relatively quiet.
I saw the Piton staring at me and together we both fell in love with each other. I was mesmerized by her! Her untouched pure beauty, her height, her strength as she went against all odds and how she stood alone as she reached for the sky.
I felt at peace during the long gaze and was so thankful that I could witness such beauty. This was a magical experience! I really love nature and nature loves me back!
The Beacon
When I got to my friend’s house, to my surprise, I was told that we would be going to The Beacon for lunch.
I said “The Beacon!” out of my astonishment. I immediately remembered the two occasions when I visited The Beacon to celebrate the big “I do!” I could still remember how excited my friends were to celebrate their wedding at The Beacon!
It was only about a ten minute drive from the Soufriere town to The Beacon. My friend had made reservations so our arrival was anticipated. We arrived shortly after 2 p.m.
Jaw drop!
If you take note of the little things like I do then you will become happier as soon as you lay eyes on the place. The building is colourful and attractive. At least to me it is.
The Beacon sits perfectly on a hill overlooking the Soufriere town. Since The Beacon is situated on a hill, imagine what you could see and how far you could see!
I simply cannot describe the view from this angle. You need to see for yourself! If you enjoy nature and appreciate nature like I do then the view will captivate your eyes.
The view is spectacular! Perfect view of the Twin Pitons, clear view of the Soufriere town and lush evergreen vegetation.
I could see the mountains, blue sea with the sun overlooking and even steams from the Sulphur Springs. Click on link to see what the Sulphur Springs look like https://ourtropicalliving.com/volcanic-exploration/
Open air restaurant
The Beacon is an open air restaurant so the view follows you wherever you go. You could relax, enjoy lunch, the view and the cool air.
We were taken to our table and served a glass of water then allowed to get our food. It is buffet style dining so you could choose whatever you like!
This is a plus! Taking whatever you like amounts to taking as much as you like. Right?
Lunch
Where do I begin!? The menu included curry chicken, fish strips, green banana in garlic sauce, fried rice, ripe plantain and even sweet potato pie. Also served were, fresh garden salad, steamed vegetables, baked potato and fig salad.
This was my first time having fish strips seasoned with ginger. The ginger added a rich taste to the fish strips. Could you imagine that tartar sauce was served as the dip, now that is genius.
There was really a party in my mouth and tummy. I could not get enough of the fish strips, I need that recipe! The chef excelled and outshined themselves. The food had a really good aroma too.
The food was well prepared and really really really really really delicious. Like oh my gosh delicious.
I enjoyed a glass of tamarind juice after! Yep, I was filled!
Dessert
Vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup was the dessert served. The missing piece was cake but we were informed that cake is only served on Sundays!
Feel good moment
Since it was a week day, the package inclusive of lunch and dessert was EC $35.00. You could even go for seconds without paying extra money! Such a great deal!
Imagine going for extra food and you only pay EC $35.00 that is a big “wow!”
The package is EC $40.00 on Sundays because extra dessert is provided.
Note
The Beacon is located next to a busy highway so be careful along the road.
The Beacon could cater for large events, meetings, birthdays, anniversaries, wedding proposals and just a causal date.
You could visit the Maranatha Gardens next to the restaurant to relax, enjoy nature, watch the plants and enjoy taking even more pictures.
It would be best to call and make reservations instead of doing walk ins. The reservation would ensure that arrangements are made to receive you so you could get to sample all the food.
Walk ins would be subject to the food available at the time because The Beacon gets crowded at times.
Thank you The Beacon
I had fun being my own model during my photoshoot and was able to take some great photos. The photos seemed like they were made for a magazine because of the perfect background.
I had a memorable experience at The Beacon. The place was well kept and the staff were really nice and friendly.
No need to second guess visiting
The place was not crowded during my visit!
Two groups came to celebrate a birthday and someone came in for a causal lunch date.
Protocols established by the government to safeguard the population from the coronavirus disease were followed.
Seating arrangements was well done so many persons could visit at the same time because social distancing was done.

This is not a paid or sponsored blog post but merely based on my time spent at The Beacon. I have no affiliations with The Beacon and this blog post is based on a comprehensive look at my experience at The Beacon.
As for The Beacon, I hope this post helps you get more reservations and visits. This blog post is to help build awareness of dining at The Beacon and to help locals see the cost effectiveness of the place.
I took a friend to Ojas Spa and Wellness to celebrate his birthday because he had mentioned feeling tension in his neck the week before. I mean, what better way to release tension from your neck than to get a massage!
Location
Ojas Spa and Wellness is located in Rodney Bay, Gros Islet. It is close to the JQ Shopping Mall, Baywalk Shopping Mall and all the other hotspots in the Rodney Bay area.
Romantic
We immediately went into a different environment as we entered the spa. We went from being in day light to instant night time mode with the dimmed lights. The dimmed lights and ambience made the spa really romantic!
The spa was clean, well decorated with candles and the smell of incense filled the room. After a few minutes of waiting we were taken to the massage room. Oohh la la!
The chilled air-conditioned room was homey and quiet. The two massage tables were decorated with a plate filled with scented dried artificial flowers and a candle.
The interior decorations in the room brought me lots of feelings of joy and excitement. The red curtains added to the elegance of the room as it filled the room with a sense of love.
I loved that there was a washroom available in the room.
Full Body Massage
The massage therapists were really professional. They knocked before entering the room because prior we were asked to remove our clothes and lay on the massage table.
The masseuse asked whether we wanted the massage to be gender based since it was a male and female massage therapist available.
I was impressed that she asked because some persons are uncomfortable with being massaged by the same sex and vice versa.
Here goes a plus for you! When you do decide to visit Ojas Spa and Wellness you get to choose between a male or female massage therapist! You comfort is what matters!
I am ready!
The massage therapists started with pressing my arms and legs then moved to massaging my neck. I wondered if the pressing would help loosen my tense muscles but I was about to find out.
My insides tingled when I was being massaged because I am generally ticklish. I wanted to laugh loudly but I held the laughter. Eventually I chuckled and said “ouuu” as my right hand was placed on my back and my arm stretched towards my shoulder.
The “ouuu” was loud enough for the massage therapist to hear so he asked if I was okay. The position of my hand made it feel like my bones were being stretched and would get broken. It made me feel a slight discomfort in my shoulder. Boy did my body need that massage to put my bones back in place!
This really was a deep tissue full body massage. My neck, back, arms, hands, legs, and feet were massaged. Even my belly too. I felt a burning sensation in my back, waist and legs during the massage of these areas.
The burning sensation was short lived but very powerful. It felt like it was sweet pain, comforting yet slightly painful.
My toes and fingers cracked loudly when pulled! This was a great massage and I felt at ease after.
The massage lasted for about 40 minutes. The experience was a good way to relax, release tension and relieve my neck from the acute pain I had been feeling.
Couples massage
Going for a massage by yourself could be a bit intimidating since you have to undress plus have a complete stranger massage your body. Knowing that you have someone familiar next to you helps you feel more relaxed and comfortable during the massage.
Couples massage are romantic but it can be done with family members and friends to help increase bonding since it is a shared experience.
I enjoyed that I had the experience with someone and that the massage started and ended at the same time!
Try the couples massage and tell me about it! The thought of having someone you know next to you during the massage keeps you more at ease. You could talk to each other, have some good laughs or simply enjoy the massage in complete silence.
Be aware
There is no need to feel uncomfortable or like your body will be seen because only the areas being massaged at the time are exposed!
Your private areas are covered properly!
The massage therapist will give you ample time to turn to your back! Your cover sheet is used as a barrier so that your naked body is not seen!
Thank you!
Thank you Ojas Spa and Wellness for your knowledgeable and experienced team, for the free glass of wine and for allowing me to have this relaxing experience.
Soon to be visitors!
Different yet affordable treatments are provided at Ojas Spa and Wellness so call for treatment options and pricing.
Remember to drink plenty water after the massage to help rid the body of the waste from the massage oil.
My significant other took me on a causal date night in October to celebrate my birthday. Although he did not mention where we were going I figured it out when he took a left turn towards the Vigie Marina.
We had been to Coal Pot Restaurant on multiple occasions but we make every visit seem like our first because we love to pamper our palate.
The waiter greeted us with a smile and warm welcome as we approached the restaurant. He had us choose our table and escorted us to our seat.
We decided to choose a seat near the waterfront so that we would easily see the shoal of fish as they came close by.
There were many chairs with balloons tied to the back, apparently many other people would be celebrating their birthday here too.
Our table was beautifully decorated with birthday decorations, a lantern and candle. I was really impressed!
Coal Pot Restaurant
Coal Pot Restaurant is a waterside restaurant located in Vigie, Castries near the George F.L. Charles Airport. The location of the restaurant provides a view of the Vigie marina and the city.
The atmosphere is fresh and cool. The backdrop from the night lights of the city and the marina mixed with the ambience of the Coal Pot Restaurant is very romantic. It makes you dream the night away.
Free parking is available.
Dinner is served
The three course menu is written on a chalk board and placed near your table for easy view.
We were served crispy and buttery bread. My significant other enjoyed the bread so much that he asked for extra.
Starter
The pumpkin soup was thick, creamy and well prepared.
The shrimp cocktail was not available so I chose the calamari creole.
The calamari creole was a mixture of sea food so I enjoyed some parts but it needed extra flavouring and had too much sauce for me.
I did not enjoy the calamari creole as much as I would have liked but you could try it, you might just love it especially if you’re a sea food lover.
Main course
Ribeye steak
The meat was served with vegetables, mashed potato pie, potatoes and ripe plantain. The ribeye steak was juicy, tender, well done and flavorful.
The lamb chop was soft and richly flavored to the bone. I really enjoyed it and was able to clear my plate!
Dessert
I was filled by dessert time so I had to squeeze in the ice cream and cake.
The chocolate cake was warm and seemed like it had just been baked. It was moist and appetizing.
I loved the guava cheesecake so much that I allowed it to melt in my mouth. Perfection!
Visit to celebrate
Coal Pot Restaurant is spacious enough for a business lunch, birthday celebrations or for any special event. You could decide to dine in for a quiet, relaxing and romantic or causal lunch or dinner.

My friend Ellery decided that we should have a Soufriere lime to celebrate our birthdays since I was born on October 12th and both she and our other friend Christiana shared October 16th.
She said that she would make all the arrangements and that it was a place I could blog about. As with most outings, I was excited to try something new and spend some time with my friends.
She said that we would be visiting Au Poye Park, I had never heard of Au Poye Park nor did I research the place but I trusted her decision.
Girls trip on the West coast
I met with two of my friends- Janel and Christiana in the city and we were ready to head down to Soufriere to celebrate our birthdays.
The drive down for a Friday afternoon was rather quiet. I could have counted the amount of vehicles we passed along the way as we existed Anse La Raye.
It was a cool and cloudy day, what I call “perfect weather!” Then again living in the tropics is filled with “perfect weather” even when it rains most of the day.
The west coast is filled with many scenic views, green vegetation, steep hills, deep valleys and lush peaks reaching for the sky.
There are so many things to see that you do not know what exactly to focus on because the tropical view is breathtaking. All sites that you see are picture perfect.
Saint Lucia is simply beautiful, I love nature so much and I love living in paradise! I enjoy being a tourist in my own country.
Plas Kassav
Plas Kassav when translated in English means Cassava Place. It is customary that I stop at Plas Kassav when I am on the west coast because not stopping for cassava bread is simply unacceptable!
Although I have not sampled all the flavours, I love, love, love, love the cherry raisin cassava bread. It is extremely tasty, soft, chewy, cherry and raisin filled and easy on the palate. This mouth-watering treat is that good and leaves me wanting more!
There are a variety of flavours ranging from chocolate, saltfish, banana, apple raisin, coconut and cinnamon.
The staff were extremely friendly and even offered to pose for a picture.
Viewpoints of the Twin Pitons along the way!
Soufriere town
As we approached the Soufriere market, the town came alive. We could hear the loud conversations near the market from the vendors, the drivers on the bus stand and from passers-by. We stopped at Ellery’s home for a quick break and then headed to Au Poye Park.
We drove and drove and drove. We drove and drove some more. I felt like we were lost even though I did not know the place. We sort directions from people we saw along the way and continued with the journey.
The view along the way is splendid. It first appeared like we were headed towards the sea then it seemed like Gros Piton was caving in on us as we got closer. The views made the long drive worth it. If you like sweet potato, there is a lot of it to see along the way.
As we got closer to the small community, the place looked familiar. Of course I had been here! My family and I had been there for my mom’s last round-de-island trip almost a year before she passed away.
For more information on Soufriere
Visit
Fond Gens Libre
Fond Gens Libre is a small community located at the bottom of Gros Piton. As we passed through the quiet community, I saw many different fruit trees filled with fruits along the way.
During my last trip here, the community members were playing cricket, playing music, barbequing and having fun. One of the grown men even gave my family and me a tour of the community and shared some of the place’s history.
Getting to Au Poye Park
Are you up for the adventure?A lady from the community sensed that we were lost and gave us directions to Au Poye Park. Put on your hiking boots and let’s go on the adventure together!
Follow the rocks that lead to the forest and keep along the trail to uncover biodiversity and the reward that awaits.
Although we had gotten directions, we remained in denial and maintained that this had not been the right place because of the rocky pathway. The helpful lady insisted that we followed the trail.
As I stared at the rocks, I wondered how I would climb but I was filled with joy to go on the adventure.
A powerful and loud sound of what seemed like a waterfall was heard but could not be seen. This raised my level of curiosity because I really wanted to see the waterfall.
We had a good laugh as we watched each other try to relive the “girl days” to climb the rocks.
The view along the trail was evergreen, the place was quiet and the pathway was rocky. At last, we saw a glimpse of the waterfall.
It must have been a 5 minute walk before we saw a sign saying “Welcome to Au Poye Park.” I grew a bit breathless during the journey but was happy for the exercise.
Au Poye Park
Wow, what a beautiful garden this is I said. You could hear the waterfall, the sound of birds chirping and see the top of Gros Piton from every angle! This was really a unique way to have lunch and experience nature.
We were greeted by the staff and saw that the place had been designed for a birthday celebration. How thoughtful! We took a few pictures and went on to seat at the table.
Starter
We had some wine and enjoyed each other’s company. I could not believe that we were still hearing the waterfall “sing” whilst at the table, it was splendid.
Lunch started off with accra commonly called fish fritters served with a spicy sauce, it made my insides tingle and I loved that feeling.
Main course
The main meal was then served, I ordered barbeque ribs. The ribs were well prepared, well-seasoned and the sauce gave it extra flavour.
The meal included rice, breadfruit fingers, flavoured ripe plantain, fresh garden salad, beans, macaroni and and cheese and green fig salad.
The food was extremely delicious and I was able to clear my plate despite being ridiculously filled.
Local juice was also available but I opted to drink my water.
Dessert
The local homemade ice cream is made from seasonal fruits. Many creamy flavours to choose from including breadfruit, lime, mango, banana, soursop and peanut. They also featured a piton beer flavour.
I enjoyed all the ice cream flavours but loved the peanut and mango the most.
Thank you Jerma for serving us and ensuring that we were okay!
History of Au Poye Park
Au Poye Park got its name because of the poye trees that took over the place. The creole word poye translates to white cedar in English.
Au Poye Park is a landmark and historical place. It was originally inhabited by Marie Charles also known as Ma Sheil and her husband until hurricane Allen in 1980.
The hurricane forced them to move to the nearby community of Fond Gens Libre and the husband sadly died the following day after sustaining injuries during the hurricane.
Wosh nene
Wosh nene translated into English mean God mother of all rocks. It is one of the largest rocks along the Gros Piton trail.
Wosh nene is an ideal rock for rock climbers I would suppose because I was tempted to try the climb.
Snuggly fitted beneath the rock is a cave. Visiting Wosh nene was one of the highlights of my trip because this was the first time that I saw a rock this size in Saint Lucia.
Lots to do at Au Poye Park
Tour the park and learn about the history. The owner Charmaine Charles does a fantastic job with teaching the history
Have lunch and try the homemade tropical ice cream
Purchase some souvenirs
Visit wosh nene
Stop for refreshments before or after you climb Gros Piton
Or, you could relax
Special note
Washrooms and showers are available.
Rooms are unavailable to overnight but arrangements can be made for persons interested in camping for the night.
Au Poye Park is open for wedding celebrations, birthday celebrations, special events and meetings.
Set a date and call to make reservations for a unique and memorable experience.
I had a spectacular time at Au Poye Park and I hope to visit again. The atmosphere was cool and peaceful. The walk was worth the food and experience. Au Poye Park serves as a sweet escape for nature lovers.

Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to edit this content. I appreciate you and your effort!
It was a Friday morning when my cousin decided to take me to Latille Falls. I had visited Latille Falls years ago but did not have a tour of the place nor did I go to the waterfall. With excitement I agreed to go on the adventure. It was a really hot day so the idea was ideal. I packed my swim wear, a change of clothing, applied my sunscreen and was ready for the journey.
East coast
Since this had not been a planned outing, we had to purchase our meals along the way. We decided to stop at Plante’s Place in Dennery to grab a bite. I purchased some fried chicken and a baked chicken meal served with rice, fig salad, ground provisions, peas and fresh garden salad. Party in my tummy!
Although I am a little rusty with the driving, my cousin allowed me to drive from Dennery to Latille Falls. The traffic was bearable and the drive was fun as we listened to music and sang along.
The east coast is filled with rich vegetation so many fruit and vegetable vendors were seen along the roadside selling their produce. Of course, I stopped to get watermelon! This is one of the many reasons I love island living. Fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available and accessible!
Latille Falls
Latille Falls is located in Micoud and is about 30 minutes from Dennery and almost an hour from the city. The gap leading to Latille Falls cannot be missed as there is a sign at the entrance along the Micoud Highway. The drive from the Micoud Highway to Latille Falls was cool and quiet since it is a mostly forested area.
As we got closer to the entrance and headed into the garden, I heard the loud and forceful sound of the waterfall. I looked around and it was a green oasis with birds chirping. So relaxing, I felt at ease.
We were greeted by one of the workers who asked if this had been our first time visiting and whether we wanted a tour of the place. We paid a small fee to tour the grounds and got a spot to have lunch.
The friendly dogs sat and watched with anticipation as we enjoyed our meal. The dogs eyeballed us for the entire meal as they patiently awaited the leftovers.
Peaceful
Being at Latille Falls was a peaceful way to experience nature and be away from the outside world. This was really a tropical experience, you see a variety of birds, herbs, flowers and fruit trees.
Except for the sound of the waterfall, birds chirping and swaying trees it is a perfect peaceful spot. You can mediate, destress and be off the grid. This peace enables peace of mind.
Fish pedicure
We passed through the wooden cabins to explore the gardens and saw the fish pond. The worker excitedly told us to put our heels in.
This was my first experience having fish nibble on my feet in a pond. I sat on the bench, placed my heels in the pond and saw the shoal of tilapia fish approaching. The small electric shocks from the nibbles were ticklish so I laughed and screamed. Every part of my body felt the tickles.
I had to remove my feet from the pond after a few seconds to help ease my laughter, I could not believe that I was getting a fish massage! My feet felt more relaxed after the fish pedicure.
Heading to the falls
The walk to the falls was about a minute and the pathway was well maintained throughout. I used the wooden siderails for support along the way because of the steep slope.
The distance and topography could be tasking for individuals with mobility issues so I recommend taking constant breaks. Stop to enjoy the scenery, have fun and capture the moment.
As we got closer to the falls, the loud rushing sound of the water was heard and it was even more powerful. I said “wow” when I saw the falls because it was spectacular. It had rained during the night so the pool appeared brown and muddy.
We placed our items on the bench chair and marveled at the beautiful scenery. The place was shady, fresh and cool.
Impact
I sat on the rocks beneath the drop point and enjoyed the water as it landed on my back. It was relaxing although I said “ouch” at times.
This really felt like a medium to deep pressure massage. The water was cold on first contact but I got used to it as my body adjusted. I could sit here for hours!
Deep into the woods
The worker informed us that there was a downstream bath point in the woods. The trail was down a steep hill and the walk was shady and about 20 minutes but the trip was worth it.
I felt like I was in the jungle. You get to experience being in the woods, many tall trees and extreme quietness. You could lose track of time in the woods as you look beyond the woods and try to see the many tree tops. Simple but beautiful pleasures.
As you get closer, you could hear the falls. Calming is the sound of the water! There were various pools to enjoy. No matter which pool you choose, upstream or downstream…you are in for an adventure!
I will visit again!
My time at Latille Falls was quiet and relaxing. The place was not too crowded with visitors.
I got to climb the mango tree to pick some mangoes and the worker insisted that I return another day for more mangoes.
The owner of the establishment said that his son makes mango cakes. I have not tried mango cakes so I would love to try those on my next visit.
Things to do at Latille Falls
Have a picnic
Go on a hike
Explore the garden
Pick the seasonal fruits
Visit the fish pond
I will say no more, visit for yourself and tell me about your experience!
Have you visited Latille Falls? What did you do during your visit? What would you do on your next visit?
Memories of you constantly cloud my mind mommy. Sometimes they make me smile and other times make me cry. Before I could not believe that you died but now I am just surprised that you died and even more surprised that you died so quickly.
I keep asking “why did this have to happen to me?” but then again death, loss and hurt are for everyone.
Approximately one week after your burial our relatives decided to go to the Sulphur Springs for a mud bath. These were all things mommy loved “family time.” Thinking of her can be horrific yet it can be the sweetest thing…
A challenging road
When my relatives decided to visit the Sulphur Springs for a mud bath I immediately thought “the first trip without mommy.” Planning a trip without her was not easy at all.
The day before the trip I was heartbroken. As I wrote the food list, it was challenging for me because I knew that I no longer had her to help prepare a dish so I chose to prepare the item with the least amount of work.
We were a team so we would split the task for any outing, now that she is gone everything is left up to me.
Road trip
As a relative woke me for the trip, with my puffy eyes and heavy head, I lazily got myself ready to prepare breakfast and get ready. Ordinarily my mom would wake me before hand with excitement and ensured that I got myself ready. As I packed my bag I heard her voice telling me what I should ensure to carry.
Bus ride
By 5:30 a.m. we stacked the bus with food and left for our journey to Soufriere. The bus ride was a bitter sweet moment because I did not hear my mom speaking the entire way.
Listening to my relatives, the cool air and the evergreen trees along the way made the journey bearable. The highway was merely empty so I watched the trees as they seem to run with the wind.
Due to the topography of the west coast, the drive to Soufriere shifts you from left to right and makes it difficult to stay still on the seat. Some sections of the road are steep and have lots of corners but your final destination is worth the ride!
I felt a sense of relaxation from the splendid views: green mountain, many banana plantation, a variety of crops in people’s backyards and glimpses of the sea from so many places. Saint Lucia is really breath taking!
Soufriere market
This was my first time visiting the Soufriere market at 8 a.m. The first thing I saw were lots of bright colours as vendors and shoppers crowded the place. I went from booth to booth with curiosity.
My relatives were able to buy hot bakes and cocoa tea, some fresh jelly coconuts and affordable clothing items at the flea market. I enjoyed the music, the friendly conversations with the vendors and the smell of the fresh fruits and vegetables.
I still got cassava
I was able to purchase farine and cherry cassava in Soufriere since Plas Kassav was closed. Plas Kassav located in Canaries has a variety of locally made cassava bread so ensure you pay them a visit on your next west coast trip. I really love the cherry and chocolate cassava bread from Plas Kassav.
The Sulphur Springs
You know you are approaching the Sulphur Springs from miles away because of the unique scent. The place really smells of a rotten egg. My god son just two years old said “nasty” when he took the smell of the Sulphur Springs thinking that someone had spoiled the air with a fart.
The Sulphur springs are a tourist destination so it is usually packed with tourist. As we got to the mud pools I was happy that the place only had a hand full of people. I was about to go into the water and it got me as excited as a child who just received a new toy.
I was filled with anticipation, would the water be too hot and would I scream. Before submerging myself in the black water, I tested it with my toes then placed my foot in and gradually my entire body. This helped my body get used to the water‘s temperature.
Soak yourself in one of the four mud baths of different depths and different temperatures. It is rejuvenating and your skin will feel smooth. Your body will feel like it has gotten a massage and you will be detoxified.
Applying the mineral packed mud on your face is like getting a free facial cleanse. You could paint yourself a cool design with the mud and use the steam vents for a back massage.
Note: It is best to visit the Sulphur Springs in the wee hours of the morning. You will get to enjoy the mud bath when the water is much cooler as opposed to afternoon when it is hotter due to the sun.
Do not wear any white swim wear because the mud bath will get your whites black.
Drive in Volcano
You can get a tour guide to learn about the volcano and the mud bath. The volcano is dormant and last erupted over 200 years ago. The volcano is said to be the “world’s only drive in volcano.” Imagine walking to the top of the volcanic mountain and seeing the black steaming hot water pools boiling with a raging sound.
As you walk along the pathway of the volcano to the left, you can hear a wide range of birds chirping loudly. The soil looks orange and the trees are extremely tall.
There is even a natural hot water pool that you could enjoy. I screamed ouch and held my foot as I dipped into the soil because it felt like I had gotten a first degree burn on my toes due to the water’s temperature. I felt at ease as my body got used to the natural hot water pool and enjoyed the clear water.
Beach stop
When coming from Soufriere travelling southwards, stopping at the Rudy John beach in Laborie is a must! We were greeted to a crowded beach as families barbequed and made it a fun family Saturday.
It was very sunny when we arrived and the sea was calm and inviting. We got some ice cream from the local shop and enjoyed it in the hot weather.
Living in a tropical island is pure paradise and it is easy to plan a fun day but there is obvious sunburns most times especially with water activities. Apply sunscreen and be mindful of the time you engage in outdoor activities.
This blog post is dedicated to my loving mom, Sophia Sonson 1961- 2020.
Continue to rest well mommy, it is sad but it is true…here creating memories without you but my memories of you will never go away. Most times I feel like I am drowning and my world has ended but I find peace with thoughts of you.
Getting that call on Friday May 15th, 2020 from my cousin saying that my mom had difficulty breathing gave me palpitations and I got an instant tummy ache. After calling my mom twice on her cell, she answered and I heard the calmness in her voice, she said she was feeling short of breath.
I told her I would call the ambulance service and she said to call them now. I was so afraid that I felt weak and the need to use the washroom because I did not want anything to happen to my mom. I forced myself to complete my tasks at work and left for the hospital near my community.
My mom was groaning and moaning when I arrived and was receiving oxygen. She had looked completely different from how I had left her that morning. She looked even more yellow, face had sunken further, her abdomen was more distended and her lower limbs more swollen.
Although in a high fowler’s position, she only felt comfortable with aid from her six pillows. After being assessed and receiving IV fluids she was sent to the main hospital. The ambulance ride was far but okay for my mom as she kept saying she felt better.
I was really worried about my mom that my insides were turning, I felt nauseated, was perspiring and thought I would have a bowel motion on myself. I tried to hide my discomfort from my mom and the emergency personnel by sniffing my shiling oil and wishing that we were already at the hospital.
Saturday
My body felt stressed as I had just worked 12 hours and had to stay at the hospital with my mom. A CT scan of the chest showed that she had bilateral pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs).
By Saturday afternoon my mom was jovial and almost seemed herself. The doctor told her that she might be discharged during the week and she was so excited that she informed almost all the relatives.
Sunday into Monday
My mom grew restless on Sunday afternoon but I left her in good spirits and with her saying that she was okay and feeling better. About 5: 20 a.m. on Monday, my mom called and said she had not slept and was not feeling well. I told her to hang in there and I would be with her shortly. I was hopeful so I packed our passports and traveling essentials in case we had to leave the island urgently to seek medical assistance.
My heart felt heavy when I saw my mom. I fed her breakfast, cleaned her and tried making her feel comfortable. After my mom saw my brother at midday, it seemed like she was ready to face death. Her breathing pattern changed, she became sleepier although still restless.
During my brother’s visit, she mentioned that today was not her day and today is the day. I felt so overwhelmed, all I could have done was held her and cry. Deep inside, I knew my mom was dying. As her breathing pattern got worse, my loved ones did breathing exercises with her. I encouraged her to call on God for healing.
After 6 p.m. on Monday, I heard my mom call her deceased grandmother then saw her eyes roll back. As her body gave way, I saw her slowly release her strength. Deep insideI knew then that was it. Even as the medical team tried to resuscitate her, I prayed and believed in God for healing.
I went into a room by myself and started praying, I pleaded with God but nothing I tried brought her back. My mom tried her best to stay alive, she fought death and remained strong throughout and although she did not want to leave us, it was her time to go.
Months before
My mom developed a chronic persistent non-productive cough from January 2020 and said that she had caught the flu that was going around. My mom did a chest x-ray and everything was unremarkable. As the months went by her right lower limb became even more swollen, x-ray of the foot showed rheumatoid arthritis.
Her abdomen became distended so an abdominal ultrasound was done and showed that she had an abdominal mass. A CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis confirmed the mass. A biopsy of the abdomen was done and the result was inconclusive (the doctors were not sure of the origin of the mass).
It just seemed like whatever we tried was not working in our favor. My mom did not want any treatment in Saint Lucia so arrangements were being made for treatment overseas. The corona virus disease did not make the travel arrangements easy and she sadly passed away on the day that everything would pull through.
Constant memories
My life has changed drastically overnight and although the world keeps on going, it seems like I am stuck in the past. I still feel like my mom will walk through the door and mention my name.
When I get home I still knock on her door and sometimes enter abruptly and shout mommy. Basic things remind me of her and I want to continue making her proud. My mom gave me everything and I feel like I did not give her enough in return.
Sometimes I experience anxiety attacks where I tremble excessively, get palpitations, instant headaches, tummy ache then diarrhea. Most days I have loss of appetite, inability to sleep, go into a gaze, become spaced out and forgetful. Other days I want to destroy everything in my path and scream in my pillow.
Unique emotions
I cry everyday not because I am worried about where you are but because I miss you and I still need you. I need your strength, I need your encouragement and I need your support. I feel like there is no one that I can speak to like I would speak to you.
I will try my best to celebrate your life because I know that your presence is with me every single moment. Some days I feel like I am doing well and say I will be strong because my mom was strong. Then seconds after I find myself crying because I know that my mom is not with me physically.
It is like who will help me separate my hair, who will be my outfit judge, who will I rush home to tell about my day and experiences. I feel numb to everything and no words can describe the pain I feel.
I cry sometimes when I hear someone call their mom because I no longer have mine. I will never truly be happy because something is always missing and that is my mom’s presence or simply hearing her voice. It is extremely painful when I think that she will not be there for the birth of my kids if I ever have, seeing me get married, own my own home and just doing things to make a parent proud.
I have cried so much that at times it is like I have no more tears. I just feel a sense of emptiness always lingering and a dark gloomy cloud overshadowing me. When I laugh I am even surprised, it is like wow I can laugh through all the hurt. My heart is so sore. Nobody can prepare you for sudden death of a loved one and words of encouragement do not make you feel better.
My everything
Mommy was my everything. My mom was super supportive and gave me encouragement in every business idea that I had. Growing up I was loved, we did not have much material assets but my mom ensured she made herself available and pushed us to succeed in everything.
She loved saying “is me that teaching you all tricks” and “if you all do not learn under me.” I thank God for giving me these 7 extra years because 7 years ago around this same time she was ill. Thank God that she did not die instantly from the blood clot so I got three days to take care of her and give her extra love.
Following the death
My phone was a hotline. I received many calls, messages and visits. I lived in disbelief that my mom had died and went through all the stages of grief. I got agitated quickly and could not tolerate constantly having people over because my mom was a private person.
A traumatic experience
I have been living in the past, playing the image in my mind of how I saw my mom’s eyes roll back. I have seen these images from previous death of patients and in movies but to experience it first hand and when it hits home, hmm it seems unreal and unimaginable. I was really traumatized and I am still traumatized. I would do whatever it takes to bring her back, I would trade my life just to keep her alive but sadly none of these things will bring her back.
Unanswered questions
I just wish to see her where ever she is, to speak to her, know that she is doing well and that she is happy. I got to the point of “who will” who will wash my clothes, who will cook for me, who will clean the house, who will wake me during my naps even though I get irritated, who will say Reems when they have something nice to tell me, who will I call after work to ask if there’s food, who will I call to make a request for what I feel like eating, who will help me in the so many things I need help in, who will advise me and who will teach me tricks like she used to say.
I relied on my mom and I needed her when she was alive, I still need her as she is gone. No idea was ever dumb, she would caution me and supported me in everything good. She has helped me so much and taught me a lot but I was not ready to let her go and I am not ready to say good bye.
Unbelievable
When I was a child I used to cry when I envisioned you dying but for it to happen like that. Hmm I can only shake my head. Letting go is so difficult. I live every day in disbelief that my mom died, died so soon, so young and without any warning signs. It was a quick and surprising death that I will never understand.
I keep saying what if, what if I forced her to go to the hospital earlier for treatment what if I tried harder to get her to do more tests although she did all necessary tests, what if I gave her blood thinner medications daily and what if I made her do yearly checks. Then again she did not want any treatment here, was always saying she feels fine and she had no pain.
I feel a sense of regret, like I should have seen the death and like her death was my fault. In all these what ifs, I am like, I feel like and casting of blame, I realized that I would only go crazy and have a mental breakdown.
My mom’s children were her greatest joy and she loved being a mom. I believe that life continues after death and that my mom is in another stage of development. It is just challenging not knowing what exactly that stage is unless I experience it for myself- “life after death.” I worry whether my mom is okay, whether she has eaten, is she happy, is she with familiar faces, so many questions I need answers for.
Remember we must die whenever we are born and we should really be celebrating death and not birth. We do not want to fight for our space in the cemetery or the vase which will house our ashes but we are quick to fight forassets and things we claim are rightfully ours. Be humble, be kind.
Rest well mommy as you enjoy your sleep 10th September, 1961- 18th May, 2020. We will meet again.

Our tropical living
Come live and love island life
This blog post is based on my feelings and personal experience.
Growing up, I was raised in a one bedroom house with my two siblings and mom in a rural community. A farmer by profession, my mother worked tirelessly to provide for her household. I loved summer vacation, no school so the weekdays were filled with crossing rivers, eating pure cocoa, sweating from the rays of the sun and going to the heights to cultivate crops.
Sometimes on the way back from the long journey with heavy load on her head, my mom would agree to station by the river for a quick bath.
River life included eating mangoes, guavas and ripe bananas, golden river bank and dark green water. I enjoyed watching my brother somersault in the basen (a deep part in the river). Farm life was taking long, fun and adventurous walks for me but serious labour for my mom.
Every Saturday my mom would be up by 2 a.m. to box her produce and make it in time to board the flat van to head to the local market in the city of Castries to sell her harvests.
Perseverance
I recall a Friday afternoon after our field trip from the hills seeing my mom being racked to a side as the river bank gave way causing her to slip and twist her ankle. She was barely able to walk and within seconds, her affected limb became edematous.
As frightened as we all were my siblings sought assistance from passers-by. Determined to generate revenue for the family, the routine continued and my mom went to the market.
By night fall that Saturday, upon returning from performing her duties, my mom was unable to walk nor leave her affected foot to the ground. She had to be assisted to the house.
Boy how much I cried seeing my mom bear her pain and working to ensure she provided for the family, I was plainly heart broken. Years after that injury, my mom’s ankle still becomes edematous and painful with prolonged standing. Like she would say, it becomes as huge as a “bandja” (yam).
Commitment
I have not seen anyone work as hard as my mom. She works in the harsh weather conditions both rain and sun. Sometimes bearing brittle produce and other times having no harvest at all when all the crops die. Most times she has to burn the wild grass and clear the field so it entails lots of manual labour.
Ensuring that her children went to every school activity, had all their books, food to eat and a good shelter kept my mom going. We had little but had each other, comfort and a home.
I remember the disappointment in my mom’s eyes when I harshly told her that I was disappointed that she became a farmer when I applied to St George’s School of Medicine in Grenada. I was asked my parents income and occupation and for the first time felt embarrassed to indicate that my mom was a farmer and hardly had an income.
Now I am thankful that my mom is a farmer and fully understand the importance of farming and its’ many benefits in stress reduction and longevity.
Self-sacrifice
My precious mom has been there for me always. Staying at my bedside after my surgery at twelve years old. She has always taken a step back, placed her children first and cared for them instead of herself.
Even after being bitten by a centipede near the house, she tied her swollen hand and rubbed it with soft candle but she refused to stop works in her garden.
My mom refused to live nor work abroad and insisted that she would not leave her kids for someone else to raise. Words of encouragement were certain as she enforced the importance of school and instilled the morals and values to ensure that we were effective members in society.
My mom abandoned her garden “one of her favourite things in the world” and stayed home to care for her grandchildren. Family comes first in all things so the decision to be a babysitter was natural and genuine.
Even as an adult, my mom still allows me to share but most times keep her personal items, prepares my meals and washes my clothes. Although she rarely uttered the words “I love you” it is shown in her every action. She is the true definition of mother.
Beneficence and autonomy are embedded in me from the comfort, discipline and hard work my mom implanted. She did not complain about our situation but continued to work hard and be hopeful.
Unanticipated illness
My mom suddenly fell ill in 2013 and spent nearly three weeks at the main hospital in the country where she underwent surgery. Within two days to my surprise my mom had generalize edema, audible crackers on each inspiration and was in a bedridden state.
My heart shattered seeing her with lids and tubes all over her body and knowing that there was nothing I could do to get her better. With fear of losing my mom, I cried myself to sleep every night yet she was cheerful although quiet with each visit.
Although bedridden, she kept her strong willed attitude and did as much as she could for herself. God brought my mom back to good health so I can appreciate her even more, so she can enjoy life, reap the benefits of her hard work and sacrifice and to continue her faith and prayer.
Hostility
Some parents refuse to realize that their children’s behavior is as a direct result of their bad parenting and from being more of a friend than a parent. All facilities were outdoors in the one bedroom house where I grew up. I grew up to using a pit toilet (pit latrine) for elimination needs.
The pit latrine which is a hole in the ground to collect faeces and urine was commonly used before invention of the flushing toilet. Seeing my mom’s daily struggles and the dilapidated structure we lived in gave me the drive to excel academically.
Although one community member began spreading the propaganda that I was a boutin (meaning that my mom intentionally gave me the incorrect father), we lived in a close knit neighbourhood. However, when my sister and I began tertiary education everything changed.
Despite still living in a rundown house, the neighbours became envious and started calling my mom gaje (to mean she practices witchcraft).
It took some time for renovations to begin but my mom now has a cozy cottage (small but comfortable). Most individuals in the vicinity have unfriended the family, say my mom is enragée (greedy) and benyen vis (full of tricks, vicious).
Lucians love having arguments in creole to have more of an effect so we were constantly struck with pawòl (chats). During a disagreement, in an attempt to insult my mom a teenage boy said “ou sati fig” meaning that she was smelling of banana because he knew that she was a farmer.
Some neighbours insist that they see turtles and “take a ole smell” in their yard because they claim my mom is involved in obeah (sorcery). Others believe that my mom affected their children’s ability to learn and get a job, put evil in their yard to cause family disputes and if someone passes in her yard then they will be turned into a stray dog.
Step up
Refrain from being envious of others, do not act like you do not know their struggles or that you are better than them. Do not forget what others have done for you. Do some reflection, do not forget your parents, remember who you are, where you came from and who got you to your current destination.
Stop using mother’s day as the time to deceitfully appreciate mom’s only to forget about them and have little to no relationship with them for the rest of the year. Appreciate everyone whilst they are here and alive.
Blessings from above
I continuously inform my mom that her blessings are only now beginning, the best is yet to come and only God can dictate her path. Long life, continued health, happiness, success, great family support, faith, hope and prayer to you mommy. With tears I say I love you for everything, you are my best friend, my mom, support, hope, miracle and gift from above.
You taught me how to be outspoken, brave, seek what I desire, walk for what I want since you said it would not just come to me and I see you in me. You guided me, ensured that I had a life better than what you knew and that I was a better version of you.

Type one fun fact you know about Lucians, e.g #fun fact Lucians like people business
This blog post was written in September 2019 so that it could be posted at the end of May 2020 to celebrate Mother’s day. Sadly, my mom passed away on 18th May, 2020.
Typically called the “Helen of the West” for its beauty. Saint Lucia is filled with nature trials, natural springs, beautiful beaches and is home to the only drive in volcano in the Caribbean. This 238 square miles island is in the southern Lesser Antillean arc. Saint Lucia is home to two noble laureates: Sir Arthur Lewis won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979 and the poetic Dereck Walcott received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992. Saint Lucia is seven times British and seven times French as these nations fought to gain ownership of the land. However, England was victorious and ruled the island from 1814 but Saint Lucia became an independent state as of 22nd February, 1979. This picturesque island is located northwest of Barbados, north/northeast of Saint Vincent and south of Martinique.
City
Castries is the capital of Saint Lucia and is home to a beautiful harbour which houses cruise ships, ferry boats and cargo vessels. The tourist packed city serves as a shopping and dining area with a variety of banks and local businesses.
Currency
The
Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$) is the official currency but the US Dollar is
accepted island wide. The EC to US rates run from US$1.00= EC$2.70. The Euro,
Canadian dollar and British pounds are all currencies widely used and are
easily convertible in banks. All currencies vary in value as it relates to
other world currencies.
Transport
Visiting
Saint Lucia is relatively easy by way of plane or boat. There are two airports
in Saint Lucia. The George F. L. Charles Airport formerly known as the Vigie
Airport is the smaller airport located in the north of Castries. This airport
is directly positioned next to the Vigie Beach and mainly receive flights from
other Caribbean islands. The Hewanorra International Airport is situated in
Vieux Fort which is in the southern part of the island. It is the larger
airport and receives flights from most international destinations.
Stay
There are a variety of hotels and bed and breakfast (B&B) to choose from throughout the island.
National Dish
The
national dish in Saint Lucia is green figs (green bananas) and salt fish. Green
figs are grown in St Lucia but salt fish is a product typically imported. Codfish
was traditionally used on the island during slavery where fish was salted then
dried but now fish variations are used for the recipe. Other popular recipes
used island wide include bakes and cocoa tea (a comfort food when it rains) and
farine and avocado. Smoke herring and breadfruit with cucumber salad (my
personal favorite) is another common choice.
People
Creativity is on the rise in Saint Lucia with persons investing in cultural music, art work both through drama and wood work and paintings. Saint Lucia is home to a diverse group of all ethnicity, where individuals are friendly, welcoming, expressive, eager to assist, technologically forward, industrious and highly educated.
Tourism
Saint Lucia has captured titles such as the World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination and the Caribbean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination. The tourism industry is vital to the country as it provides jobs and investments. Jobs are created through taxis services, hotel stays, dining at restaurants, site visits, souvenir sales and as goods and services are imported to meet the demands of the sector. The tourist season is mainly during the dry season but between January to April. The majority of tourist come to the island via cruise so most of their time is spent in the city.
Weather
This tropical island has weather to enjoy throughout the year. The dry season runs through December to May and the rainy (wet) season from June to November. The average temperature in Saint Lucia is 27 C (78 F) with 75% humidity.
Opportunities
Although Saint Lucia appears as a dot on the globe, it is filled with small technical and vocational opportunities for growth and development. Basic career options or side gigs include becoming a coconut or fruit vendor, farmer, fisherman, food caterer, tour guide, hotelier or arts and crafts maker.
Sweet life
Whilst
some countries are known for seasonal activities, Lucians will tell you that Saint
Lucia has year round events. Living in this breath taking stunning island
brings multiple emotions, that of joy, joy and more joy accompanied by fun, fun
and more fun.
I can recall my deep desire to reside abroad for a change in career, better paying job and to merely experience a new culture but then I remembered what I would be missing. My mom’s company and home cooked meals, watching the orange sunset, touring the island within one day, going to the Jounen Kwéyòl activities in October and simply enjoying the folk music. Going aboard would mean that I would no longer be able to freely speak in Patois (French Creole or Kwéyòl) which is a secondary French based language spoken in the country, this did not go well with me. Not to forget, ziplining and bathing in the warm mud bath Sulphur Springs, viewing the Majestic twin Pitons, walking through the rain forest, boat rides and swimming in the clear blue waters whilst watching the reefs and fish.
MUST VISIT
For all
the fruit and vegetable lovers! Come enjoy some fresh jelly coconuts, juicy
mangoes, ever red cherries, yellow pineapples, orange papaya, sweet sugar
apples, pink wax apples and rich avocados.
Imagine going to bed watching a grey sky, a beautiful moonlight and bright stars but waking up to clean, fresh air and birds chirping. Let’s enjoy my mountainous, two seasons- wet and dry but perfect weather island.
Although individuals can come to visit Saint Lucia via cruise, I would recommend vacationing for a few days or weeks to enjoy the countless benefits of this small island. Coming by cruise or just for one day would mean lots of missed opportunities because it limits site seeing, fully discovering the island, tasting local treats and buying local souvenirs for loved ones.
Holidaying in Saint Lucia is sure to be relaxing, a stress reliever, engaging in self-care, acts as a hide away, a place to fall in love or to affirm love and it is paradise so ensures peace of mind.
Want to live in the city of Castries or the vegetative outskirts of the island whilst visiting? Either way be prepared to enjoy this island and the numerous activities it has to offer and questioning whether you should go back to your home.
