Pure island woman A true Lucian

Lively struggles

Growing up, I was raised in a one bedroom house with my two siblings and mom in a rural community. A farmer by profession, my mother worked tirelessly to provide for her household. I loved summer vacation, no school so the weekdays were filled with crossing rivers, eating pure cocoa, sweating from the rays of the sun and going to the heights to cultivate crops.

Sometimes on the way back from the long journey with heavy load on her head, my mom would agree to station by the river for a quick bath.

River life included eating mangoes, guavas and ripe bananas, golden river bank and dark green water. I enjoyed watching my brother somersault in the basen (a deep part in the river). Farm life was taking long, fun and adventurous walks for me but serious labour for my mom.

Every Saturday my mom would be up by 2 a.m. to box her produce and make it in time to board the flat van to head to the local market in the city of Castries to sell her harvests.

Perseverance

I recall a Friday afternoon after our field trip from the hills seeing my mom being racked to a side as the river bank gave way causing her to slip and twist her ankle. She was barely able to walk and within seconds, her affected limb became edematous.

As frightened as we all were my siblings sought assistance from passers-by. Determined to generate revenue for the family, the routine continued and my mom went to the market.

By night fall that Saturday, upon returning from performing her duties, my mom was unable to walk nor leave her affected foot to the ground. She had to be assisted to the house.

Boy how much I cried seeing my mom bear her pain and working to ensure she provided for the family, I was plainly heart broken. Years after that injury, my mom’s ankle still becomes edematous and painful with prolonged standing. Like she would say, it becomes as huge as a “bandja” (yam).

On a mission, garden “here we come!”

Commitment

I have not seen anyone work as hard as my mom. She works in the harsh weather conditions both rain and sun. Sometimes bearing brittle produce and other times having no harvest at all when all the crops die. Most times she has to burn the wild grass and clear the field so it entails lots of manual labour.

Ensuring that her children went to every school activity, had all their books, food to eat and a good shelter kept my mom going. We had little but had each other, comfort and a home.

I remember the disappointment in my mom’s eyes when I harshly told her that I was disappointed that she became a farmer when I applied to St George’s School of Medicine in Grenada. I was asked my parents income and occupation and for the first time felt embarrassed to indicate that my mom was a farmer and hardly had an income.

Now I am thankful that my mom is a farmer and fully understand the importance of farming and its’ many benefits in stress reduction and longevity.

Trimming the plants in the backyard

Self-sacrifice

My precious mom has been there for me always. Staying at my bedside after my surgery at twelve years old. She has always taken a step back, placed her children first and cared for them instead of herself.

Even after being bitten by a centipede near the house, she tied her swollen hand and rubbed it with soft candle but she refused to stop works in her garden.

My mom refused to live nor work abroad and insisted that she would not leave her kids for someone else to raise. Words of encouragement were certain as she enforced the importance of school and instilled the morals and values to ensure that we were effective members in society.

My mom abandoned her garden “one of her favourite things in the world” and stayed home to care for her grandchildren. Family comes first in all things so the decision to be a babysitter was natural and genuine.

Even as an adult, my mom still allows me to share but most times keep her personal items, prepares my meals and washes my clothes. Although she rarely uttered the words “I love you” it is shown in her every action. She is the true definition of mother.

Beneficence and autonomy are embedded in me from the comfort, discipline and hard work my mom implanted. She did not complain about our situation but continued to work hard and be hopeful.

Unanticipated illness

My mom suddenly fell ill in 2013 and spent nearly three weeks at the main hospital in the country where she underwent surgery. Within two days to my surprise my mom had generalize edema, audible crackers on each inspiration and was in a bedridden state.

My heart shattered seeing her with lids and tubes all over her body and knowing that there was nothing I could do to get her better. With fear of losing my mom, I cried myself to sleep every night yet she was cheerful although quiet with each visit.

Although bedridden, she kept her strong willed attitude and did as much as she could for herself. God brought my mom back to good health so I can appreciate her even more, so she can enjoy life, reap the benefits of her hard work and sacrifice and to continue her faith and prayer.

Garden view

Hostility

Some parents refuse to realize that their children’s behavior is as a direct result of their bad parenting and from being more of a friend than a parent. All facilities were outdoors in the one bedroom house where I grew up. I grew up to using a pit toilet (pit latrine) for elimination needs.

The pit latrine which is a hole in the ground to collect faeces and urine was commonly used before invention of the flushing toilet. Seeing my mom’s daily struggles and the dilapidated structure we lived in gave me the drive to excel academically.

Although one community member began spreading the propaganda that I was a boutin (meaning that my mom intentionally gave me the incorrect father), we lived in a close knit neighbourhood. However, when my sister and I began tertiary education everything changed.

Despite still living in a rundown house, the neighbours became envious and started calling my mom gaje (to mean she practices witchcraft).

It took some time for renovations to begin but my mom now has a cozy cottage (small but comfortable). Most individuals in the vicinity have unfriended the family, say my mom is enragée (greedy) and benyen vis (full of tricks, vicious).

Lucians love having arguments in creole to have more of an effect so we were constantly struck with pawòl (chats). During a disagreement, in an attempt to insult my mom a teenage boy said “ou sati fig” meaning that she was smelling of banana because he knew that she was a farmer.

Some neighbours insist that they see turtles and “take a ole smell” in their yard because they claim my mom is involved in obeah (sorcery). Others believe that my mom affected their children’s ability to learn and get a job, put evil in their yard to cause family disputes and if someone passes in her yard then they will be turned into a stray dog.

Step up

Refrain from being envious of others, do not act like you do not know their struggles or that you are better than them. Do not forget what others have done for you. Do some reflection, do not forget your parents, remember who you are, where you came from and who got you to your current destination.

Stop using mother’s day as the time to deceitfully appreciate mom’s only to forget about them and have little to no relationship with them for the rest of the year. Appreciate everyone whilst they are here and alive.

Organic produce

Blessings from above

I continuously inform my mom that her blessings are only now beginning, the best is yet to come and only God can dictate her path. Long life, continued health, happiness, success, great family support, faith, hope and prayer to you mommy. With tears I say I love you for everything, you are my best friend, my mom, support, hope, miracle and gift from above.

You taught me how to be outspoken, brave, seek what I desire, walk for what I want since you said it would not just come to me and I see you in me. You guided me, ensured that I had a life better than what you knew and that I was a better version of you.

Bonne Cuisine

High class a la cart dining at an affordable rate

Amazing!

Gently located upstairs from Val’s Place is a secret high class restaurant serving a variety of meals for everyone. Now that the secret is out! Bonne Cuisine is located in Richfond Dennery opposite the Richfond Gas Station and is open from Mondays to Saturdays 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. YES there is a dress code. Dress elegantly and enjoy a romantic dinner. Both walk ins and reservations are accepted.

It’s a date

Wait next to the “Please Wait Here” sign and wait for the waitress as she introduces herself, smiles and welcomes you to the restaurant. Then get escorted to your seat and be mesmerized by the ambience and modern furnishings.

It was the day post Valentine’s day at about 8 p.m. so Bonne Cuisine was fully decorated with lights and romantic decors.

My eyes dazzled as I marveled at the drink and dinner menu served respectively. They made me feel like I was at a hotel and really had me wanting to sample everything.

First-class restaurant

The light coloured interior added to the uniqueness and elegancy of the restaurant. The walls were not naked but covered with paintings that enhanced the feel.

The dim light candled table setting boosted the elegancy, added to the intimate experience and made me feel well relaxed.

The restaurant was neat with good seat setting. The atmosphere was cozy, appealing and relaxing.

The dinner sitting at Bonne Cuisine is ideal for private intimate dinners. The tables are spaced out so gives extra privacy.

The seats were comfortable and I loved the marble tables.

Although the music was low, I heard the hip classical jazz and even said “wow been a while since I heard that song.”

I listened to hear for the sounds from the ongoing traffic since the restaurant is located next to a highway and I could barely hear the sound of the moving vehicles.

The room temperature was right and I did not once say I was cold since I typically feel cold.

Note no smoking is allowed whether dining indoors or in the veranda.

You are served

Get served garlic bread compliments of Bonne Cuisine. The taste of the herbs and melted butter on the garlic bread spoke volumes of the overall taste.

The garlic taste was not overpowering but just right. The bread also just the right texture, toasted perfectly. Getting served garlic bread compliments of the restaurant felt like it was a “thank you for coming” token and solidified that it would be high class dining at a fancy restaurant.

The friendly, uniformed neatly dressed waitress made the dining experience interesting as she knew the menu really well.

Watching the drink menu

Tantalizing

Drink menu

The drink menu is easy to manoeuvre so I did not feel overwhelmed and like I did not know which drink to choose.

Drink ingredients are also included for better decision making and to at least have an idea of what goes in your drink. A big plus for individuals with various allergies!

Come see for yourself the many drinks to choose from both with and without alcohol. Mocktails, cocktails, champagnes and even wines are available.

Fruit Punch

The blended fruit punch was filled with flavor from various fruit juice. It tasted like a juice infusion and was just as sweet and refreshing as I like it.

Dinner menu

Dinner it is

This is really a la cart dining at its’ best. As with a three course meal, you first start off with an appetizer to snack on, soup or salad, go to the mains then do dessert.

The mains are served with complimentary rice or side but the side is for an added fee.

The dinner menu is eye boggling and has something for everyone and is friendly to all eaters.

Let’s begin!

Caesar salad

I started the three course meal with the Caesar salad served with romaine lettuce, croutons and parmesan cheese. As I dug in, I smiled.

The lettuce was fresh, the croutons dry and crunchy and the cheese added extra flavour to the salad.

The sauce was rich, creamy, smelt good and tasted just as good.

The sauce when combined to the dish was exquisite and added a burst of flavors. It made the meal the cherry on top for me.

Pumpkin soup

The pumpkin soup was thick, creamy and was full of flavour. It did taste of pumpkin, was nourishing, satisfying, tasty and it did smell nice.

Honey BBQ ribs

This is what I had been longing for all along! The ribs were marinated in honey barbeque sauce and had a sweet aroma. Lots of flavour and the ribs were cooked to perfection.

The ribs were meaty, juicy, tender and the taste literally kicked my palate with excitement from the flavours. The honey BBQ ribs were addictive and indeed finger licking good. Very well-seasoned!

The salad was crunchy and rice also well-seasoned. I was super full after eating the ribs so had to take some time to relax and let my tummy settle. Would I even be able to squeeze in dessert?! I wondered…

Digging in

Caribbean succulent steak

I enjoyed the well done steak. The peppercorn sauce added an extra spicy taste to the steak. The big grilled steak was tender, succulent, lean, flavorsome and was easy to chew. Great smell and very well done! Need I describe some more?

Dessert

Chocolate cake

By dessert time I was overly satisfied with the meals and brilliant service. Chocolate cake is one of my partner’s favourite so he enjoyed every bite.

The chocolate cake had a rich chocolate flavour. The frosting was not too sweet and the cake was not too moist but the sweetness, taste and moisture remained consistent throughout.

I was very thrilled with the chocolate cake. I love ice cream so yes I would obviously love the vanilla ice cream served. There are different ice cream flavors so ask your server for the available ice cream choices.

Cheesecake

My choice from the different cheesecake toppings was strawberry. The cheesecake was perfectly done- I love that the crust was thin.

The cheesecake filling was smooth on the palate, rich and creamy. The cheesecake tasted heavenly and finalized the savour of all my meals.

Our waitress Geanelle

Our waitress knew and explained the menu really well and gave further details on the wines and drinks. She came back at a reasonable time to clear the table so we did not feel like dinner had to be rushed nor like we had to force to eat quickly.

Geanelle checked on us intermittently to ensure that everything was going well. She gave warm smiles, was friendly, courteous and engaging.

She was also neatly dressed in a uniform.

Special events

Special events such as birthday celebrations, anniversaries and other engagements can be hosted at Bonne Cuisine for a maximum of 25 persons.

Ensure that you mark your calendar and book your dinner next year for Valentine’s day and Mother’s day to take advantage of the special offers and giveaways.

I was able to witness a couple celebrate a birthday. The area was well decorated and the birthday girl became really excited when a happy birthday song was played and the waitress came out with a dessert stacked with firework candles.

Outdoor dining

Have your dining experience in the veranda whilst enjoying the scenery and view of the community. Shutters are available for rainy days so no need to worry about the weather.

Cheers!

Cheers to the owner of Bonne Cuisine for granting me the opportunity to have such a wonderful experience. I enjoyed every moment Tracey!

Special note

Oh my, all meals at Bonne Cuisine were well flavoured and exquisitely presented. I could not believe that this type of dining and such wonderful food is available in the outskirts of the island and it is so affordable.

The ingredients used in the meals at Bonne Cuisine were of high quality given the superb taste. The seasonings used added extra taste to the meals.

I enjoyed the well balanced meals as I indulged in the three course menu. They reminded me of the simple pleasures that make life better and memorable.

The chef is gifted, creative and well experienced to prepare such tasteful meals.

Meals are served in a timely manner and high level quality service is provided.

Highly recommended

Visit Bonne Cuisine to meet and eat with friends, spend time with loved ones over a great meal, relax, enjoy the ambience and have a top-notch experience. Romantic for couples yet good for friends and families to dine and enjoy togetherness during dinner.

Bonne Cuisine is a place where you can eat out every day yet not go into financial depression. The food, taste, quantity and quality of service is worth every penny because you will not regret the money spent. If anything, you will want to try everything on the menu.

The environment made me feel as though I was at an upper class restaurant in the city. The atmosphere was perfect for a quiet dinner.

Dining at Bonne Cuisine exceeded my expectations. My experience was extraordinary and memorable. Revisiting Bonne Cuisine is an easy decision and I have no hesitation. I highly recommend dining at Bonne Cuisine.

To consider

Stairs can be tasking for individuals with disabilities or for those who use the wheelchair but one can always order over the telephone and pick up the order.

Everything about Bonne Cuisine is high end, do not believe me? Then visit for yourself and tell me about your experience!

Dining

No longer do you need to only dine in the city or its’ surroundings. Feeling to dine in the outskirts of the island then choose Val’s Place for a causal lime.

This was my first time visiting Val’s Place and I was in awe. Music was heard immediately upon entering the establishment and my eyes caught the various cage machines.

I headed to the bar and took a look at the food menu which displayed an assortment of mouth-watering options.

I was very impressed with the atmosphere! Val’s Place is well-organized so that people playing on the cage machines do not affect those who are just there for their meal or to have some drinks.

What’s the waiting time…

Val’s Place offers both in and outdoor dining. Sit on a comfy stool, enjoy the air condition and dine indoor or dine on the table outside to enjoy the fresh air.

Either way you will enjoy the experience and the fast service.

Val’s Place is what I call a pub where you can get a warm, freshly made meal, mingle with friends, watch football or play on the cage machines.

This restaurant review was done upon invitation from Val’s Place so my partner and I chose to visit on a Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. The atmosphere was mostly quiet with the music being heard in the background. Some individuals were dining in and others were using the cage machines. How excited they were to win the games.

By 7 p.m. it was a completely different atmosphere and the place had transformed. Val’s Place was now packed with individuals watching football, having causal conversations, playing on the cage machines and enjoying their meal.

Behind the scenes!

Meet Val! Yes you guessed right, he is the owner of Val’s Place!

Make a quick decision

Bring your friends and do not worry about cost because the menu is affordable plus there are specials on drinks. The busy days are Tuesdays and the weekends so choose a day convenient to you.

What a wonderful feeling!

My family and friends will tell you that I am a food lover and big eater so I am able to fully judge a meal. Trust me when I say that the meals at Val’s Place will have you wanting more.

Recommendation

I do recommend Val’s Place. Great atmosphere, great food, great service, polite staff and great location. The restaurant is wheelchair friendly so accommodates everyone. Please be advised that no smoking is allowed indoors and no loitering is allowed at the restaurant.

I will definitely be visiting soon and so should you! Tell me about your experience, how was the food and service?

Coronavirus disease a Public Health Emergency

Coronavirus is the latest disease to hit the world unexpectedly and has spread like wild fire. This is a disease that Public Health Officials were underprepared for and did not see coming. By now we all know what the disease is, how it spreads and how to prevent it. But what about coping during the disease outbreak?

The Coronavirus disease has caused panic and shock globally and has caused a worldwide crisis. The effects of the Coronavirus disease affects us all one way or the other due to reductions in the availability of merchandise, food and medical supplies and other commodities.

Many individuals have been displaced, many have lost their jobs, have uncertainty of the future, lost loved ones and have even died. The Coronavirus disease shows that more money needs to be invested into the health care sector.

Coronavirus disease? What it is, how it spreads…

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2020) Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Most individuals affected with the disease will develop mild to moderate respiratory illness but recover without any treatment.

Serious illnesses are more likely to occur in older individuals and persons with underlying medical conditions (WHO, 2020).

Transmission of COVID-19 virus can be reduced through constant hand washing or use of alcohol based rub and not touching your face.

WHO (2020) explained that COVID-19 virus mainly spreads through discharge from the nose and droplets of saliva when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Symptoms

It generally takes 2-14 days for infected individuals to show symptoms of the virus but symptoms differ from person-to-person and some may have few to no symptoms.

Symptoms typically mimic a cold or flu so persons may have a runny nose, sore throat, fever, cough or become breathless. It is important to self-quarantine by staying indoors and away from crowds for at least 14 days if showing symptoms.

Practice

It is essential to practice respiratory etiquette by sneezing or coughing into tissue, properly dispose of it then washing or sanitizing your hands. If you do not have tissue at the time, sneeze or cough with a flexed elbow but never directly into your hands. My preference is to do so inside my shirt, you could also give it a try.

There is no vaccine or treatment for COVID-19 at this time but human clinical trials have begun.

As of March 28th, 2020 there has been 571, 678 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus disease and 26, 494 confirmed deaths globally (WHO, 2020).

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds

Saint Lucia

Here in Saint Lucia we have had four confirmed cases of the Coronavirus disease as of 28th March, 2020. Multiple measures have been implemented to help safeguard the population and prevent and/or reduce the spread of the virus.

Some businesses have closed following COVID-19 whilst others have shortened their opening times. Many employees especially in the hotels have been temporarily let go due to closures. In some other sectors where possible, employees are working from home.

A curfew has been set for 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily and no large gatherings of persons more than 10 is allowed. There has been major event cancellation, school and facility closure, travel restrictions and quarantine of individuals following the outbreak.

The crisis has led to a reduced supply of products entering the country which has resulted in individuals buying more than they need to. False information has swept the media and there has been racist attacks on Chinese nationals.

Nurses have been subjected to discrimination from the public for fear that the virus will spread since they are at the front line. With the closure of schools, parents have claimed that they are home-bound and have to cope with their kids being at home instead of at school.

Now is the time

Simple strategies can be done whilst at home to reduce trips to the grocery store. Order from trucking services if available in your community. Common products such as canned foods, water, juice, sanitary products and snacks can be preordered and delivered to your home.

Choose an alternative way of getting your groceries and only go to the grocery store unless it is a must.

Drink plenty water, get some fresh air by sitting in your balcony if possible, use an air humidifier indoors and limit direct interactions with others.

Coping whilst at home!

No need to be bored when indoors.

Pray

Praying helps us remain connected to God, informs God that we need Him and makes us feel more in control of our situation. Praying helps me feel better as it gives me hope and helps me feel less tense.

Spend time with your family

Spending time with your family can serve as a stress reliever, help you get to know them better and help catch up on lost times. Play childhood games such as hide and go seek, dominoes or chess. Why not bake a dish together?!

Exercise

Exercise for me is a way to feel good, relieve the daily struggles of life and to look good. Exercising helps me feel energized and rejuvenated plus it is good to improve blood flow and helps reduce many illnesses.

Boost your immune system

Drink freshly squeezed homemade lemon juice, orange or any fruit or vegetable juice. The natural vitamins will help combat the common cold and flu so you can remain healthy and virus free.

Catch up on sleep

I love to sleep. Sleeping ensures that your body charges and helps keep you relaxed. Sleep sleep and sleep to look younger and feel better.

Clean your house

House chores can be so overwhelming especially if it all have to be done in one day. Having tons of chores to do not only gets you tired but can be tedious. Use this time to split your chores and ensure that you clean your surfaces, sweep the dust from the ceiling and corners, scrub your pans, change the curtains and make your house look new.

Meditate

Take a few seconds for yourself to clear your mind, help identify your purpose and to redirect your thoughts. You will be surprised the good ideas you could come up with.

Read a book

I just read “Envy” by Sandra Brown and boy did I enjoy that novel. The ending had me surprise, excited and wanting more. Ever read Envy, what was your reaction? You can also read my other blogs! Visit https://ourtropicalliving.com/archives/

Learn a skill

Sometimes we put things back and say that we will get to it sometime and one day. Well since you are supposed to remain indoors plus there is a curfew enjoy your new skill.

Groom your pets

This is an opportunity to clean and groom your pets and to show them some affection.

Government verses self-sustain

With the induction of the Coronavirus disease more has to be done to help individuals get back to a state of normalcy and financial stability when this blows over. Individuals should attempt to self-earn where they either utilize their skill to bring a source of income to the family.

Persons can engage in barter where products are exchanged or begin to grow quick crops such as herbs and vegetables for sell. Just remember to be safe, wash or sanitizer your hands and practice social distancing during the trade-off.

Families have to attempt to self-sustain themselves as the government would not be able to provide to the needs of everyone. However, I believe that small acts on the part of the government can be done to help reduce the burden on families directly affected.

Alleviating monthly tax charges on salaries, holding back on persons paying for tax returns when they owe the government and unemployment stipends can be done. Payment of basic yet essential bills can be reduced for customers or paid off completely by the government for the economically deprived.

I understand that the government does face its challenges with trying to stabilize the economy following the unprecedented, unforeseen economic impact that the virus has posed. Both the government and employers should be lenient and make the necessary measures to protect employees.

Healthcare workers, I Thank you!

To the healthcare workers, where do I begin? Thank you immensely for risking your lives on a daily basis to provide care to us. Leaving your families at home and going into the unknown. Not knowing who you will come into contact with, what you would have to deal with or how traumatizing the job will be.

Being exposed to various contagious diseases and not knowing if you will make it back home safely or without contracting a pathogen. Whether you do it wholeheartedly, you do it nonetheless by improvising with the resources available and whilst most times being hungry, tired, sick and overworked. As many are let go and sent home to work to ensure their safety, you are at the front line in the battlefield.

Social distancing does not apply to you as you work on the battlefield to combat this growing public health issue. Sometimes you fail the public but you are human too. As the world continues with this global unrest and as you make continued efforts to reduce the impact of the virus, I hope your efforts will be recognized and that for once you will be respected and appreciated.

I hope that when this is all over persons would not forget your efforts but instead reduce the scrutiny and verbal and physical abuse. I hope that all healthcare workers in Saint Lucia debrief and get at least 7 days extended to their vacation as a thank you for your effort. You are wonderful healthcare workers, keep up the excellent work!

Note

The joke only ends when the effects of the joke hits home. This is serious so practice proper hygiene, respiratory etiquette and social distancing. Protecting yourself from the virus might just save your life and your family’s life. Save you from mourning the death of a loved one, the turmoil that comes from coping with the sick and the financial hurdle that accompanies health care expense. Be safe!

Take care of you and practice self-care. We should all work to reduce transmission of COVID-19 since this is a team effort approach. Let us all play our part to help reduce this global problem and protect our country.

Liberty at last!

Saint Lucia was discovered on 13th December, 1502, what is now called National Day and a public holiday but it is not Independence Day. Saint Lucia attained Independence on 22nd February, 1979.

Each Independence anniversary signifies when Saint Lucia gained Independence under Sir John Compton of the conservative United Workers Party. This sweet island of Saint Lucia is celebrating 41 years of handling its ‘own affairs since it is celebrating 41years of Independence.

Sir John Compton pursued Independence in the early 1970s to get political Independence from Britain and to be an independent state of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Enjoying the independence decorations at Waterfront, Castries

Controversy

As with all change in life, some individuals were skeptical about having Politicians take total control over the island. This caused great discussion on the matter which warranted a political debate on the meaning of sovereignty.

Sir John Compton saw ownership over Saint Lucia under Britain’s control as a barrier to the nation’s economic development.

Being controlled by another state limited the country’s ability to partake in international economic agreements and join international organizations such as the World Bank.

This would only reduce grants from other states other than Britain and retard the country’s development so yes Sir John Compton had to take action.

Distinct Flag

The flag of Saint Lucia was adopted in 1967 and designed by Saint Lucian artist Dunstan St Omer. Changes have been made to the flag over the years but the original design still stands.

Blue and Yellow, Black and White

The cerulean blue part of the flag of Saint Lucia represents fidelity, the tropical sky and the surrounding Caribbean sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The gold commonly called yellow depicts the sunshine and prosperity.

The black and white part of the flag links the cultural influence and shows the harmony between the white and black race on the island as they work and live in unity.

There are three triangles in the center of the flag. One shaped as an isosceles  triangle coupled with the island’s twin Pitons as they rise from the sea towards the sky to signify a symbol of hope and aspiration of the people.

Freedom

Some would suggest that Independence helped locals take over the country since before Independence everything had to be done under Britain’s supervision.

Saint Lucia now has freedom to be its self, rule on its own, manage its internal affairs and make its own decisions.

The reduced foreign control means that locals have better control of local commodities to help preserve scarce resources.

Independence Activities

Calendar of Events for 41st Independence Celebration

There are various activities happening for Independence so you will be able to partake in one if not all.

A Calendar of Events was published to show the activities that will be celebrated for the 41st Independence anniversary.

A theme is selected yearly for Independence and “Now is the Time, Let’s Do This Together!” has been selected to call on Saint Lucians to action.

Celebration

Independence celebration commences at the beginning of February with numerous activities.

Diverse activities occur island wide all centering around Independence however the main activities are based in the island’s capital, Castries.

This is a time of patriotic songs, discussions, displays, dances, public speeches, art work and going back to history.

Let me not forget!

Saint Lucia is thankful to its Independence baby named Helen Alexandra Jean. Happy 41st Helen.

Trust me…it’s a must see

With the thrill of the celebratory season individuals typically wear the colours of the National Flag throughout the month of February.

The eve of Independence 21st February is seen as “National Colours Day” where everyone is encouraged to wear the colours of the National Flag to show national pride.

Vehicles are seen throughout the island with the National Flag strapped on windows and even neatly fitted on the bonnet.

Business places, schools and especially the city are dressed in the colours of the National Flag to show appreciation for the day.

Talent comes to light as craft makers creatively display their skills with fine art and Independence accessories.

Limitless fun opportunities

Be patriotic and decide on the many activities to attend. Either way you will surely have fun with the endless options.

Worship at the Independence Gospel Concert, sing and dance along at the calypso activities or the Miss or Mister Independence Pageant.

Decide to partake in the Independence Walk, Independence Color Run or school rallies.

Better yet be an onlooker in the Military Parade, Saint Lucia Motor Sports Club Independence Island Ride or Super Moto event.

The option of watching the Independence Youth Debate or Independence Creole Debate is also available.

There are also Independence cookouts and Independence displays at various business places.

Make yourself present for these activities and witness how Saint Lucia comes alive to celebrate its freedom and anniversary.

Independence Day

At midnight the flag is hoisted so face the flag and stand at attention if you attend the ceremony. There is then an abundance of fireworks. Pick a decent spot, listen to the pops and admire the fireworks that make the sky shine with brightness.

Many Saint Lucians and foreigners alike go on a “round de island” trip to celebrate the island’s anniversary.

This public holiday is marked with many onlookers around the island as they settle by the road side or sit in their balconies patiently awaiting the hundreds of “bikers” as they pass and perform stunts.

Onlookers can be spotted wearing the colours of the National Flag and also waving the National Flag in approval of the activity.

The Military Parade occurs in the city which also attracts a large crowd. The parade is extremely colourful and explains the history of Saint Lucia with each display.

Since the parade is fun and amazing, families gather to enjoy the event positioning themselves along the parade route with their coolers filled with drinks.

Lots of shouting and screaming with excitement as the parade goes on. I enjoyed watching some of the Police Officers from the Band dance along to the music as they paraded.

Other memorable Independence activities

Some individuals learn about the history of Saint Lucia, how Saint Lucia gained Independence and read patriotic books to broaden their knowledge on Independence day.

Others go to the beach, have a barbeque or simply go on a boat ride with family and friends.

Since it is a public holiday, many families have family gatherings where they bake cake and enjoy homecooked meals.

Some individuals watch the Independence activities on social media and listen to the Official Address from the Prime Minister.

Our Sweet Helen

Saint Lucia has faced some success and failures but it continues to prosper as it goes along the journey of self-care and independence. Together we Saint Lucians make up our country, let us continue to serve and be of service to our nation. Let us continue to learn from our teachers so that we can continue to bear noble laureates and individuals with prestigious skills and talents. We will always go back to the past and embrace where we have gotten and look forward to a brighter future. But, let us continue to give back to our country and help others. As we welcome other cultures let us never forget, undermine or underuse our unique tradition and culture.

What does Independence mean for Saint Lucians?

Independence empowers us Saint Lucians to thrive, survive and use our maximum potential to the betterment of our country. Independence is a time to reflect on what has happened in the country.

Each Independence anniversary enables the country to perform a needs assessment to develop an appropriate plan of action for further improvement.

This helps ensure a brighter future as the country moves forward and steps foot into another anniversary.

Bel Jou Hotel

First time visit

This was my first time at the Bel Jou Hotel and I was amazed. I had never heard of the Bel Jou Hotel until I saw a friend’s display picture and inquired on her whereabouts two months before my visit. She explained that the hotel had offered good food, friendly staff and was affordable so of course I had to explore given that my partner’s birthday was around the corner.

I love hotel stays- no cooking, no cleaning but waking up well relaxed and to all meals ready to enjoy. This helps retain all your energy for activities you would want to engage in.

I was highly excited to enter through the gates of the Bel Jou Hotel since I did not know what to expect given that it was my first time visiting. I was warmly greeted at the front desk by Danielle who made the check in process easy and fun with her radiant smile and sweet personality.

The pond next to the front desk got my attention as the colourful fish swam across their habitat. I sipped on my fruit punch whilst at the lounge where we checked in and marvelled at the details and finishing in the room.

As Danielle accompanied us to our room I was struck by the view of the Vigie beach. The view was magnificent and the sea and sky looked like one as their uniform colour marinated and matched perfectly together.

I love the view!

No buggies or air lifts are available but the walk is bearable since the hotel is not very big. You will most certainly see the common island features of the tropical hillside at this hotel. Lush vegetation, blue sky and cool environment.

No need to rush since you can remain on compound till 6 p.m. after check out. The hotel rates vary depending on the season visited so look out for seasonal rates. No pets are allowed at the hotel but the birds seem like pets since they are friendly and come within close proximity.

Want to go to the beach, no problem! The hotel is not located next to the beach but there is a shuttle service with times of pickup and drop-off to the city and the Vigie beach. The shuttle service to the city and the Vigie beach is completely free but has to be booked at the Guest Services Desk preferably a day prior.

Room 107

I realized that the room we would stay in offered a garden view and was located near a pool. As I stepped from the patio and into the room boy was I impressed. The wooden ceiling fan immediately captivated my attention with its’ unique look.

A chilled campaign and a birthday note awaited compliments of the hotel. The air conditioned room included a telephone, clock, television with cable, electric kettle, sugar, tea and coffee.

An iron, ironing board, safe, bathrobes, hairdryer and toiletries mainly soap, shampoo and body wash were also available. I loved the ensuite bathroom with the sink and toilet adjacent. The room did not have a refrigerator but one could have been requested for use. We had two single beds connected to form a single large bed. I loved that the room had two closets and three mirrors.

The extra lighting on the headboard seemed like antennas that came in handy at nights. They seemed like they were night lights since they provided just enough lighting so I would not disturb my partner.

Pools

There are two pools at the Bel Jou Hotel and you can join in on the aqua aerobics. The pools are open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The upper level pool is close to the restaurants and is lined with pool chairs and parasols.

The lower side pool is quieter and is located more towards the base of the hotel next to the garden. There is a self-serve bar open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., cool sitting chairs that you can rock in and merely enjoy the scenery. Read a book whilst underneath the parasol or sleep all day long on the comfy sun bed.

Enjoyment

My friends will tell you that I am usually hungry since I eat small frequent meals. The food at the Bel Jou Hotel was exceptional and I enjoyed the various food choices. Cyprian kept our drinks coming and knew what drinks we loved!

The property was clean, well maintained and the groundsmen did an amazing job with the landscape.

The housekeeper was extremely friendly and happily assisted us with getting some extra towels.

Whilst I did not dine at the Rooftop Restaurant & Bar I enjoyed the view and got to see the city at a different angle with the assistance from the binocular. I got to see a few planes take off at the nearby airport.

I really enjoyed watching the guest and staff dance and sing on the dancefloor at the Verandah Restaurant during the fun night activities.

I loved the layout of room 107 since the shower and bathroom were separate. The indoor chairs provided extra cushion and helped me sleep peacefully during the day when my partner went to the gym. I also enjoyed relaxing and sitting in the patio to watch the birds on the palm tree.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the manager Dean asked us how we were doing and even volunteered to be our camera man.

I enjoyed getting my own drink at the self-serve bar next to the pool on the lower level of the hotel and especially enjoyed the snow cone.

My stay at the Bel Jou Hotel is unforgettable

If you want time to relax, get to know your partner further, meditate, find yourself then this is the place for you. The Bel Jou Hotel is very intimate, extremely quiet and peaceful. I enjoyed watching the trees sway with the cool breeze, the birds in their natural habitat and the landscape of the hotel.

Feeling tense, then have a spa day at the hotel. You can eat anytime of the day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. unless you order additional meals for a fee. Gaze at the clear blue Caribbean Sea and take photographs of the city and surrounding regions in its’ entirety.

My three day stay at the Bel Jou hotel was marvellous.

Feel like something is missing?

You can book a variety of tours at the tour desk from hiking, ziplining, sailing from Castries to Soufriere to taking a trip to Martinique.

A country Christmas: A Lucian Christmas story

Weeks before Christmas

The Christmas feeling for me begins at the end of October because of the unique weather. It becomes extremely cold at nights and early mornings, cold enough to wear a light sweater.

Night fall comes quickly in November and 6 p.m. seems like 9 p.m. Although Bamboo bursting is done for the Creole festival, it continues up until New Year’s in Saint Lucia. Visit https://ourtropicalliving.com/fest-of-creole/ for more information on bamboo bursting.

When December finally arrives the city of Castries becomes crowded with foreigners and locals doing their day-to-day transactions before the holidays. Sale signs and Christmas decorations are seen flooding business windows. Christmas giveaways over social media become the norm as organizations promote their products in promotional activities and select winners who qualify based on their criteria.

But of course, most family members living aboard come to visit to enjoy the Christmas holidays. Most times these family members have not visited Saint Lucia for years and other times are family members that have not been on island for the year. Flat vans are seen throughout the island with barrels from overseas safely secured at the back waiting to reach their destination.

Christmas togetherness

Christmas in Saint Lucia is centered around family gatherings where together family members decorate the house and Christmas tree, prepare family lunch and enjoy meals. It is a season of togetherness, lots of dancing, talking and listening to Christmas carols.

Christmas shopping is a common tradition where families go on a shopping spree and pack their house with drinks and goods in preparation for Christmas day. Expect an abundance of food and putting on a few extra pounds for the New Year. Christmas for some Saint Lucians is a season of good cheer, forgiveness and giving.

A Christmas party, fun family activities, exchanging of gifts and lunch is planned by most family members and sometimes a special Christmas costume is chosen to be worn by some family members. A lunch menu is established and each family member is given an item to prepare or purchase to bring to the lunch. Meals can be prepared together or individually. When meals are prepared together, one house is used for all meal preparation for the lunch and everyone assist with the meal preparation.

Christmas lunch with family

Christmas unwrapped

Christmas is celebrated on December 25th in Saint Lucia but weeks of preparation is done for this special day. The Christmas cleaning for most begins at the end of November and goes into the first and second week of December. The trees and flowers in the yard are trimmed. All indoor appliances are dusted, dirt and spider webs are removed from all corners in the house and the kitchen utensils are unpacked, washed, dried then repacked.

The windows cleaned, floors scrubbed or pressure washed, curtains and rags changed and chair covers and cushions replaced with a different clothing. The house is repainted and the Christmas tree decorated. It is classic for my mom to iron all the curtains before hanging. Some individuals decorate their house with Christmas lights and many Christmas decorations. The newest and best of all household items are placed out for use.

Individuals patiently wait for the barrels coming from relatives overseas and hope that it will come in time for Christmas or New Years. Most wait for the barrels to arrive before grocery shopping to avoid buying duplicates but instead to purchase only items needed. The barrels are packed with groceries, clothes and household appliances. The excitement of receiving the barrels for me occur when all my family members gather to view what was sent. Together we unpack the barrels, watch what each other receive and try on our new apparels.

Enjoying the Christmas barrel

My Christmas

Want to know what it is like spending Christmas in paradise? Let me tell you…

Since I am from a farming family, the Christmas season is lots of manual labor. During the day my family goes to the garden to harvest sorrel and at nights remove the sorrel seeds to sell at the local market the following day. After a long day in the garden, with pursed lips I get the knife and think of the task at hand. I always hope that I will not see a centipede curl up around the seed nor would the prickly spikes from the sorrel fruit go too deep into my fingers. My hands would be blood red from the juicy nature of the sorrel fruit. My family members turn the seed removal into a mini party where we drink juice or tea until the fest is done at about after midnight to 1 a.m. when the seed removal mission is accomplished.

Sorrel cutting

Fond childhood memories

As a child we were allowed to scrub the floors until they got white so that the newly purchased carpet could be placed on the floor. It made the house smell “new.” All breakable soft drink bottles were washed and bought to the brewery for refill, the louvers were polished and the pots scrubbed white enough to see your reflection.

Christmas time brings back lots of my childhood memories. Growing up my family had no Christmas tree but my mom gave us the best Christmas she could. We would go to the city the week before Christmas every year to purchase a Christmas toy. The Christmas shopping was painful for me since we would walk till our feet were sore from going to store to store to find the best deals.

The sidewalks in the city would be packed with vendors. By night fall on Christmas eve, I always had insomnia from the excitement of knowing that I get to play with my new toy the following day. I can remember the sweet aroma from the ham and fruit cake my mom baked every Christmas eve. The smell would infest the house, smelled amazing! I loved licking the bowl after the fruit cake batter was placed in the pan. Cocoa tea, ham and eggs, cucumber salad and local bread were made every Christmas morning. Christmas dessert was fruit cake and Ferrands vanilla ice cream, extra tasty!

The community members would parade through the community at the crack of dawn singing Christmas carols, playing local instruments such as the drums, guitar and chac-chac and dancing to the rhythm. On Christmas night most individuals partake in the “house to house” to enjoy food and rum and share the Christmas cheer.

On Boxing day cow heel soup was made and the left over from Christmas day used. The festive season would end with a bang since my family went Assou square for New Year’s where we purchased cotton candy and glowing toys.

It is funny how we think as children. Yearly, I remember asking Santa to bring me toys but after a no show for my entire childhood, I began thinking that Santa did not visit my home because we had no chimney.

Unpacked and ready to be washed, dried then repacked
Cow slaughter

Animal slaughter

The tropical island of Saint Lucia has many livestock so by right animal slaughtering is a must. Butchers obtain permits and licenses for slaughtering to ensure that it is safe for use by the public. The Christmas season is good for meat lovers but not too good for animals since they are subject to animal cruelty. Animal slaughter is seen as an economic event and a common tradition in Saint Lucia. Some argue that the night before being slaughtered, animals would keep noise since they sense their death.

A crowd would gather to view the slaying of the animals. It is painful for some to watch whilst others enjoy the view. The conscious animals are either hit from behind the head with an object or the throat slayed. The animal is hanged by the hind legs and the blood is collected for pudding making. Common animals slayed include cows, goats, pigs and sheep. Sometimes the animals shake and keep lots of noise before they die.

The blood is drained then hot water is thrown on the animal for easy hair removal using a knife, blade or a razor to scrape the hair off the skin. The animal is halved, washed thoroughly and let cool before cutting. A large metal barrel is used to boil the pudding and the animal parts.

Being an onlooker

Christmas eve

Some of us love the Christmas rush and shopping on 24th December for last minute items. This is a fun activity for the children as they enjoy the packed aisles and the long lines but it is a hassle for adults. Long queues are seen in all supermarkets and everyone has to be on the look out for shopping trolleys from shoppers who are done shopping.

Expect to hear Christmas carols island wide and see a few fireworks being tested. Some persons go to church for midnight mass, some go to Jouvert which is a daybreak party that goes into Christmas morning and some do both. The daybreak party brings a large crowd, lots of alcohol, lots of music, lots of talking, lots of shouting, lots of singing and lots of dancing.

Decorating the Christmas tree

Christmas day

At last, it is here! Christmas day for many is a time of eating and enjoying family time. By Christmas day I am super tired from the many Christmas duties performed on Christmas eve. The morning starts off a bit quiet as most try to rest from the Jouvert party and firework watching. By mid-morning loud music is heard as individuals including parents, grandparents, uncles, cousins, children, in-laws, half-relatives, basically everyone gather to share the Christmas spirit.

My family gathered for our annual Christmas lunch and the menu included sorrel juice, fruit punch, orange juice, soft drinks, malt, peanut punch, wine, piton shandy, piton and Heineken. Snacks were peanuts, nuts, fruit cake, cookies, pringles, ice cream, tuna and cheese sandwich, marsh mellows and mini chocolates.

A Christmas menu cannot be done without rice, peas, macaroni and cheese, lasagna, potato pie, ground provisions, baked chicken, beef, ham, corn pie and fresh garden salad and steamed vegetables. A list of fun activities and sharing of Christmas stories were on the activity list but after being too full we began sharing jokes.

Just before the party is over, food is placed in what I call “a Christmas takeaway plate”, the house is cleaned and the nonstop hugs and kisses start as everyone leave to go to their home. Christmas truly ends for me at the end of January when the Christmas decoration goes down and all the Christmas drinks are done.

Sorrel drink and fruit cake

Making fruit cake

My type of fruit cake commonly known as black cake is a soft, dark cake made with spices and dried fruits that has been soaked in alcohol. My mom soaks raisins, prunes, cherries and mixed fruits in half a bottle of cherry wine for about four months and adds more wine to the mixture once it is soaked up by the fruits. On Christmas eve she mixes 2 pounds butter with 2 pounds sugar, adds 1 teaspoon vanilla essence and then gradually adds 12 eggs and a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg until smooth. 2 pounds flour and 1 medium sized baking powder along with a small bottle of gravy browning is slowly added to the mixture. The oven is preheated, the batter placed in a pan and baked for 45 minutes to an hour and a half at 300 ﹾF/148 ﹾC. Cherry wine can be placed on the batter once fully baked.

Sorrel drink recipe

Sorrel juice is made from the hibiscus plant and can be used to make tea. It can be used as a plain drink but milk, piton or chairmen’s reserve can also be added for extra flavor. My mom makes her sorrel drink with 6-8 cups of water, 3 cinnamon sticks, 6 cloves, 4 star anise, 2 cups of sorrel and 1 teaspoon crushed ginger. She adds all the spices to a pot, let boil for about 20 minutes, turn down the heat then add the sorrel to the pot for a 30 second boil. She lets it sit for a day then strains it with a clean white cloth. Very simple recipe yet so tasty.

Traditional sorrel drink and fruit cake

My Christmas favorite is hanging out with my family, eating fruit cake and drinking peanut punch filled with ice! What is your Christmas favorite?

All Inclusive Secret Luxury

A luxurious two day stay at St. James’s Club Morgan Bay Saint Lucia

Deciding to go to St. James’s Club Morgan Bay Saint Lucia for yearly staycations for the past seven years has been an easy decision since it is affordable, all-inclusive and offers both beach and pool access. My last stay at the St. James’s Club Morgan Bay although was a surprise, was for pleasure, relaxation and a romantic getaway weekend since it was October- my birth month. Passing through security at the entrance of the hotel always seem like the first time. I get excited because it means “no more outside world but being in my home away from home.” I immediately shut-off the outside world, close my eyes, do my excited dance and embrace the scenery.

St. James’s Club Morgan Bay Saint Lucia

The St. James’s Club Morgan Bay privately sits on 25 acres of land and has 325 guestrooms. Wi-Fi is available for free in the lobby and Sunset Lounge which is the main entertainment area and for a fee in some rooms.

Feel free to go from pool to pool. The hotel has four pools catering for both adults and kids. Though I am not a strong swimmer, I had fun floating and swimming to the “swim up bar” to have a Virgin Pina Colada as I sat on a stool in the pool.

Come enjoy eating, drinking and relaxing at the hotel’s multiple bars, lounges and restaurants. If you prefer remaining in your room all day long then order room service from midday to 9:00 p.m. for an added fee.

Do not worry about the kids and wondering whether you will have any free time for yourself. The hotel offers supervised activities for the kids and day care service is also available for a fee.

The hotel provides various free beach water activities including water-skiing, banana-boat rides, windsurfing and paddle boarding. Lessons for the various activities are also provided.

Perfect location

St. James’s Club Morgan Bay is located in Choc along the Choc Bay, Castries which is in the northern part of Saint Lucia. The view is magnificent! The rooms could either have a garden view, ocean view and of course a view overlooking everything, garden, pool and ocean. I especially loved watching the neighbouring island Martinique, it felt like the two islands were connected since the view was clear.

The hotel is located about one hour from the Hewanorra International Airport so the drive from the airport to the hotel provides an added view of the picturesque tropical island. If coming in from the George F.L Charles Airport (Vigie Airport) in Castries then arrival to the hotel will be about 10 minutes. Visit https://ourtropicalliving.com/what-is-758-st-luciasweet-saint-lucia/ for more information on the airports in Saint Lucia.

Although the hotel has everything you need to enjoy your stay, it is stationed about a 5 minute drive from Massy Stores Mega- a bulk grocery supermarket. KFC, Caribbean Cinema, Domino’s Pizza, Rituals Coffee Shop and other businesses are also located in that area.

Arrival

Want to overnight at the hotel? Check in is at 3:00 p.m. and check out is at 12:00 p.m. on the final day of your stay. Go to the hotel for a day pass and check in at 10:00 a.m. and check out at 6:00 p.m. that same day. Hotel rates change depending on the season visited so look out for great deals.

If you’re coming in by bus then enjoy the walk to the front desk, coming in by car enjoy the free parking or if you’re coming in via taxi enjoy the ride in. Either way you come in, be on the lookout for the lovely waterfall before the reception area.

Welcome to my heaven on earth!

It really amazed me at how peaceful the entrance to the hotel is although it is within close proximity to a busy highway.

The excitement of walking in to a warm greeting staff politely handing you a rolled cold minty towel to use as a face wipe and hand sanitizer is refreshing for the tropical weather. The reception area is large with various sitting options and I felt welcomed with the smiles and greetings from staff.

I sipped on a shaken fruit punch as my partner checked us in and booked the restaurant we would dine in for dinner that night. All activities can be booked at the Tour Desk from shopping in the city, touring the island, having a wedding or visiting the neighbouring island Martinique. Souvenirs are available at the different boutiques at the hotel. Be sure to check it out so you can share a piece of your vacation with family and friends.

Instant attraction

I felt like royalty as I got off the buggy that took me to my sanctuary. Walking into an air conditioned room with a fruity scent and good ambiance is so soothing. My jaw dropped and I uttered “aww” when I saw the chocolate coated pineapple stripes and a chocolate cake with a birthday card compliments of the hotel. The chocolate cake was soft, not too sweet and was very tasty. I was so eager to eat the pineapple chocolate mixture that my mouth watered.

I was taken aback by the various paintings on the wall: paintings of flowers, the beach, coral and the pitons reminded me of the reasons I came to the hotel in the first place, to relax. I was pleased that the room was close to the beach and main restaurant because some rooms are far but buggies are readily available to take you around.

I unpacked my hotel wear, placed my personal items in the safe and was ready to explore the hotel.

Compliments

The hotel is huge and has various sections. No need to worry though, there is orientation for new visitors. A guide book is also provided in the room with welcome remarks, resort map and in room dining menu. The various restaurants with dinner reservations guide and tranquility spa menu of services with types of spa treatment are also included. No need to get bored in your room after heading in for the night, watch television or sit in your patio and enjoy the view.

Paradise

Looking around the hotel is always breath taking. Looks just like a picture out of a magazine and no edits are needed for picture taking. During the day, I enjoyed watching the blue sea and sky. The lights from the city seemed like thousands of stars by night fall.

“Sand Pit” is right on the beach and serves as a mini bar. No need to leave your beach chair, red flags are available which when raised signals to the waiter that you want a drink. If you do not want to get a red flag then simply take a few steps to Sand Pit and order a drink.

I tried the lemon water to quench my thirst and it was so refreshing. Cold water with an added flavour! I found a perfect spot on the beach and laid on the beach chair for hours. How can I forget, an ice cream cart is also available on the beach, I had two ice cream cones to help keep me cool.

Although a packed program of activities for both land and sea was placed in the room, I did not want to participate in any of the beach, pool or gym activities. The time spent at the hotel was merely to rest and enjoy the perfect weather.

No need to worry

The room is spacious and comes with everything you need and is fully furnished. It is air-conditioned, has a closet with a safe, iron and ironing board and is sizeable to house your luggage. A telephone, refrigerator, tea and coffee maker, flat screen television and an electric clock is also free to be utilized.

The bathroom is spacious with a comfortable toilet, tub, shower and face basin that can be used at the same time by two individuals. As I gazed at the paintings in the bathroom I got lost in my happy thoughts. The bathroom also has a hair dryer, complimentary soap, bath wash and shower gel. A private patio is available in all rooms so enjoy the fresh air and spectacular view of the hotel.

Food

Plum Tree Bar & Grill

The Plum Tree Bar & Grill is located next to the family pool and is in close proximity to the gym and tennis court. Get a seat, wait for the menu from the waiter then order a drink and something delicious. This restaurant is kid-friendly so children can enjoy the waterslides in the pool.

I call Plum Tree Bar & Grill the “Fast food restaurant” since it commonly serves such foods as burgers, paninis, hotdogs and fries. Cookies, cakes and an assortment of ice cream are also available. For those who do not fancy fast food no need to worry, salads, wraps and other healthy options are also available.

The food at Plum Tree Bar & Grill was appetizing and the staff were friendly. Get everything you need without leaving the poolside at the Plum Tree Bar & Grill. Have a small bite near the pool and look over your shoulder to view the garden.

Enjoying the spiciness of the panini at “Plum Tree Bar & Grill.” Shaken fruit punch with a spicy mayo, jerk chicken, sweet chili sauce and cheddar panini with French fries

Palms Restaurant

The Palms Restaurant is my favorite for all meals since it is buffet style and opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves a different theme daily for lunch and dinner. I enjoyed listening to the birds chirp and watching the cats tour around, it made me feel at home. The Palms Restaurant serves different cuisines so you get to eat different food varieties.

Noo, this is not dessert! This is my choice of breakfast at “Palms Restaurant” almost done eating the banana tempura, pork sausage, omelette with pepper, onions and bacon, rock cake and float with jam on top
Dessert at “Palms Restaurant” mixed fruit crumble, muffin and roasted corn

BBQ Hut

The BBQ Hut is located on the beach next to Morgan’s Pier so you can dine on the beach. Enjoy the burgers, grilled chicken and salad. I especially loved digging my toes in the gold sand on the beach as I ate and watched the speed boats on the water.

Morgan’s Pier

Ready for a romantic dinner over the water at Morgan’s Pier

If you want to have an intimate and quiet dinner over the sea filled with finger touches, then have dinner at Morgan’s Pier! Make your reservation, give your room number on entry at the restaurant and get escorted to your seat. Watch the menu to decide on the three course meal, listen to what your taste buds crave, order and enjoy the delicious food and view. Watch and listen to the waves as they hit the rocks, watch the sailboats on the water and enjoy the lights from the city of Castries shine as bright as stars. I loved the waterfront dining over the sea at Morgan’s Pier.

Morgan’s Pier has the most delicious thyme seasoned, crispy fried calamari, with paprika, corn flour dust, cayenne pepper and aioli
Dinner at “Morgan’s Pier” Morgan’s land and sea burger with brochette of shrimp scampi, beef patty, chorizo and peppered pineapple

I eat frequent small meals so I was satisfactorily stuffed when it came time for dessert. Dinner at Morgan’s Pier was beyond expectations, the food was spectacular and the service was awesome. The waiters were friendly and gave intermittent check-ups to ensure that dinner was going as desired.

Choc Bay Café

For the sweet tooth candy lovers, there is something for your too! Choc Bay Café serves treats and tea from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Indulge in expresso, tea, sandwich, cakes, everything nice and sweet! I loved the chocolate fudge with sprinkles on top, they were my favorite!

Yes…more restaurants for you to enjoy

I enjoyed Tree Tops Pizza & Pasta since it overlooks the resort. Come enjoy the salad, pastry, freshly made oven-fired pizza and of course yummy desserts.

The Bambou is a beachfront restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch and a la cart dinner menu.

Dress elegantly and have a romantic dinner at Le Jardin. This restaurant offers a more quiet dinner in an air-conditioned room but for an additional fee.

Stay

Watching the ocean from the room and listening to the waves crashing in on the shore and rocks was magical.

Waking up felt like I had slept for days, I felt well rested. The bed was extremely soft, comfortable and huge. I was able to stretch fully and roll around.

Being at St. James’s Club Morgan Bay was a stress reliever and helped me forget about my day-to-day life whilst I enjoyed the atmosphere. The staff made me feel at home, the environment helped keep me at peace and affirmed my romance.

Overall, my stay at the St James’s Club Morgan Bay was outstanding and I recommend the hotel. I had a wonderful experience and the food was tasty. The staff were friendly, provided warm greetings every time they saw me, always offered assistance and were enthusiastic about my stay.

The environment was quiet, relaxing and fun. I am pleased that I saw security guards patrolling areas of the resort and was amazed with seeing maintenance clean the beach at the crack of dawn.

Umm...

I wish that the Palm Restaurant was opened for lunch on the last day of my stay but since it was not available I went to the BBQ Hut for lunch where I ate barbeque chicken and salad. I would have preferred what most Saint Lucians call “a meal” which includes rice, peas, a cheese pie, salad and ground provisions.

All pet lovers, be aware that no pets are allowed at the hotel. For the all-night party goers please note that live performances and entertainment at the resort ends at 11 p.m. However, the resort is about 15 minutes from Rodney Bay so you can still enjoy live entertainment and late night clubbing.

Fest of Creole

Jounen Kwéyòl en Sent Lisi (Creole Day in Saint Lucia)

Hearing the sounds of bamboos bursting in my community at the end of September is reassurance that its’ the Creole season. Creole Day is not just a day but is weeks of cultural activities that distinguishes Saint Lucia from other countries.

Madras (the national dress) varieties

Creole Day for me is waking up to the scent of the spices from my mom’s cocoa tea. How much I love eating her hot bakes and salt fish with cucumber salad to the side. Creole Day is filled with colours, food, different aromas, large crowds, round-de-island trips, street activities and bamboo bursting.

Bakes and cocoa tea made with homemade coconut milk, yum yum

How can I forget playing tick-e-toc, Quadrille (the national dance of Saint Lucia) and folk dancing with musical concerts, beauty pageants, cultural exhibitions, promotional media campaigns, free food samples and Creole giveaways.

Floral Society

Celebrated on October 17th in honour of the patron Saint Margaret Mary Alacocque is the Marguerite (La Magwit) festival. A grand fete occurs island wide with a church service where Marguerite members typically dress up in purple, sing traditional songs and parade through the communities. The rest of the evening is spent in a banquet where notables are invited. The Marguerite festival is a floral society in Saint Lucia that is incorporated into the Creole heritage month.

October sweet October

This is of course my birth month! October is recognized as Creole heritage month with festive cultural activities occurring throughout the island. These activities are based on Saint Lucia’s cultural heritage with African and French dialect, art exhibitions, portrayal of the national dress, music and most of all “FOOD!”

Calendar of Creole activities for 2019

A calendar of activities is released yearly to celebrate the Creole season and the main Jounen Kwéyòl activity occurs the last Sunday in October. Different communities are selected to host the main event each year but most communities throughout the island engage in their own unique celebration.

Heritage

Saint Lucia is mixed with British, French, African and Caribbean cultures. The Creole language in Saint Lucia commenced during slavery as African slaves tried to communicate with each other. Neighbouring islands Martinique, Dominica and Guadeloupe also share the national heritage and culture. The Folk Research Centre (FRC) in Saint Lucia was established in 1973 as a non-profit voluntary association and has preserved the cultural heritage of Saint Lucia along with the Creole language. FRC ensures that information on Saint Lucia’s culture does not become extinct and is available for coming generations. FRC has been pivotal in helping Saint Lucians embrace their culture.

The Creole Language

Although Saint Lucia is seven times British and seven times French, the French influence has been more prominent in the country. The French controlled Saint Lucia for longer periods than the British during the 17th and 18th century. The French were more committed to settling and developing their culture more than their British counterparts so the Creole language remained on the island. The English language continues because the British won complete control over the land in 1814 until it became an Independent state in 1979. See my blog: what is #758? St. Lucia…sweet Saint Lucia (https://ourtropicalliving.com/what-is-758-st-luciasweet-saint-lucia/) for further reading on Saint Lucia.

Resurrection

French Creole commonly known as Patois or Kwéyòl is the mother tongue of many Saint Lucians. French Creole uses mostly French and French derived words with a small combination of English and gives more meaning to words and phrases. Publicly speaking in French Creole was once considered to be taboo and was generally associated with the lower class and the outskirts of the island. French Creole was not taught at schools but the language has recently gained acceptance especially with the rise of the “Dennery Segment” artists. These artists use the Creole language to better articulate their songs. Although French Creole is not spoken by all Saint Lucians, it is now considered to be island living. French Creole is now being taught at some schools and books are being published in the language to increase cultural development and national pride. There has also been a rise in television and radio broadcasting in French Creole.

So…what exactly is Bamboo bursting?

Bamboo bursting in Saint Lucia is common during New Years, the Christmas and Creole season. The bamboo plant is the national plant of Saint Lucia and although has many functions is commonly used as a cannon for bamboo bursting. A cannon is formed from a long and large bamboo where one end of the bamboo is left closed and the open end is elevated. A small hole is placed near the closed end and kerosene inserted in the hole and ignited with fire after blowing. A “boom” sound can be heard from the open end of the bamboo when it is fired even from miles away. It is customary that individuals compete in what is called the “loudest blast.” Individuals listen for the boom sound coming from the other side of the community and then respond by trying to create an even louder blast and boom as supporters cheer along.

Creole Traditions

Making gooseberry (seawet) jam on a clay coal pot purchased in Choiseul, Saint Lucia

A coal pot is a device commonly used in Saint Lucia as a traditional way of cooking and uses charcoal instead of gas. I love the slow boil and added flavour food gets when cooked on a coal pot.

Using wood to cook breadfruit in my backyard

Place two rocks parallel to each other and add some sticks between the rocks then use dry leaf or the wood to ignite a flame. Be super careful and ensure that you do not ignite yourself. Who needs a cooking stove, island living is convenient and so much fun.

Using charcoals to grill juicy chicken wings on a homemade metal grill

Common foods served during Creole Day

The national dish (green fig and salt fish), smoke herring with green fig or breadfruit, crab callaloo, bakes, crayfish, cassava, farine and avocado.

Common specialties are penmi (made with cornmeal, sweet potato and pumpkin), local bread, manicou (opossum), fish eggs, shrimps and lobster.

Of course bouillon made with either fish, meat or chicken with dumplings and ground provisions such as dasheen, plantain, yams and banana.

Be sure to look out for souse (a soup made with pork and cucumber then added). Cocoa tea, local rum, local juice mainly cane, mangoes, golden apples, sour orange, guava, cherry and lime are on the top of the list for soothing drinks.

Have a sweet tooth, then expect sweet treats like guava cheese, coconut balls, coconut cake and gooseberry (seawet) jam.

What is #758? St. Lucia…sweet Saint Lucia

Typically called the “Helen of the West” for its beauty. Saint Lucia is filled with nature trials, natural springs, beautiful beaches and is home to the only drive in volcano in the Caribbean. This 238 square miles island is in the southern Lesser Antillean arc. Saint Lucia is home to two noble laureates: Sir Arthur Lewis won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979 and the poetic Dereck Walcott received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992. Saint Lucia is seven times British and seven times French as these nations fought to gain ownership of the land. However, England was victorious and ruled the island from 1814 but Saint Lucia became an independent state as of 22nd February, 1979. This picturesque island is located northwest of Barbados, north/northeast of Saint Vincent and south of Martinique.

City

Castries is the capital of Saint Lucia and is home to a beautiful harbour which houses cruise ships, ferry boats and cargo vessels. The tourist packed city serves as a shopping and dining area with a variety of banks and local businesses.

Currency

The Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$) is the official currency but the US Dollar is accepted island wide. The EC to US rates run from US$1.00= EC$2.70. The Euro, Canadian dollar and British pounds are all currencies widely used and are easily convertible in banks. All currencies vary in value as it relates to other world currencies.

Transport

Visiting Saint Lucia is relatively easy by way of plane or boat. There are two airports in Saint Lucia. The George F. L. Charles Airport formerly known as the Vigie Airport is the smaller airport located in the north of Castries. This airport is directly positioned next to the Vigie Beach and mainly receive flights from other Caribbean islands. The Hewanorra International Airport is situated in Vieux Fort which is in the southern part of the island. It is the larger airport and receives flights from most international destinations.

Stay

There are a variety of hotels and bed and breakfast (B&B) to choose from throughout the island.

Enjoying the scenery at St James Club Morgan Bay

National Dish

The national dish in Saint Lucia is green figs (green bananas) and salt fish. Green figs are grown in St Lucia but salt fish is a product typically imported. Codfish was traditionally used on the island during slavery where fish was salted then dried but now fish variations are used for the recipe. Other popular recipes used island wide include bakes and cocoa tea (a comfort food when it rains) and farine and avocado. Smoke herring and breadfruit with cucumber salad (my personal favorite) is another common choice.

People

Creativity is on the rise in Saint Lucia with persons investing in cultural music, art work both through drama and wood work and paintings. Saint Lucia is home to a diverse group of all ethnicity, where individuals are friendly, welcoming, expressive, eager to assist, technologically forward, industrious and highly educated.

Tourism

Saint Lucia has captured titles such as the World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination and the Caribbean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination. The tourism industry is vital to the country as it provides jobs and investments. Jobs are created through taxis services, hotel stays, dining at restaurants, site visits, souvenir sales and as goods and services are imported to meet the demands of the sector. The tourist season is mainly during the dry season but between January to April. The majority of tourist come to the island via cruise so most of their time is spent in the city.

Weather

This tropical island has weather to enjoy throughout the year. The dry season runs through December to May and the rainy (wet) season from June to November. The average temperature in Saint Lucia is 27 C  (78 F) with 75% humidity.

Opportunities

Although Saint Lucia appears as a dot on the globe, it is filled with small technical and vocational opportunities for growth and development. Basic career options or side gigs include becoming a coconut or fruit vendor, farmer, fisherman, food caterer, tour guide, hotelier or arts and crafts maker.

Sweet life

Whilst some countries are known for seasonal activities, Lucians will tell you that Saint Lucia has year round events. Living in this breath taking stunning island brings multiple emotions, that of joy, joy and more joy accompanied by fun, fun and more fun.

I can recall my deep desire to reside abroad for a change in career, better paying job and to merely experience a new culture but then I remembered what I would be missing. My mom’s company and home cooked meals, watching the orange sunset, touring the island within one day, going to the Jounen Kwéyòl activities in October and simply enjoying the folk music. Going aboard would mean that I would no longer be able to freely speak in Patois (French Creole or Kwéyòl) which is a secondary French based language spoken in the country, this did not go well with me. Not to forget, ziplining and bathing in the warm mud bath Sulphur Springs, viewing the Majestic twin Pitons, walking through the rain forest, boat rides and swimming in the clear blue waters whilst watching the reefs and fish.

MUST VISIT

For all the fruit and vegetable lovers! Come enjoy some fresh jelly coconuts, juicy mangoes, ever red cherries, yellow pineapples, orange papaya, sweet sugar apples, pink wax apples and rich avocados.

Imagine going to bed watching a grey sky, a beautiful moonlight and bright stars but waking up to clean, fresh air and birds chirping. Let’s enjoy my mountainous, two seasons- wet and dry but perfect weather island.

Still in my pyjamas but looking for crayfish in the Troumassée river, Micoud

Although individuals can come to visit Saint Lucia via cruise, I would recommend vacationing for a few days or weeks to enjoy the countless benefits of this small island. Coming by cruise or just for one day would mean lots of missed opportunities because it limits site seeing, fully discovering the island, tasting local treats and buying local souvenirs for loved ones.

Holidaying in Saint Lucia is sure to be relaxing, a stress reliever, engaging in self-care, acts as a hide away, a place to fall in love or to affirm love and it is paradise so ensures peace of mind.

Want to live in the city of Castries or the vegetative outskirts of the island whilst visiting? Either way be prepared to enjoy this island and the numerous activities it has to offer and questioning whether you should go back to your home.
